Dr. Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu is a Nigerian American physician known for his groundbreaking discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players. He was born in 1968 in Anambra State, Nigeria. His mother was a seamstress, and his father was a civil mining engineer and community leader.

Omalu graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in June 1990 at the age of 22. After completing a clinical internship and three years of medical service in Jos, Nigeria, he moved to the United States. In 1994, he completed an epidemiology fellowship at the University of Washington and then joined Columbia University's Harlem Hospital Center in 1995 for residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology.

Omalu holds multiple advanced degrees and certifications, including fellowships in pathology and neuropathology from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in epidemiology, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon University. His work in pathology led to his appointment as the chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California, from 2007 until 2017.

In 2005, he published the first findings of CTE in a former NFL player in the Neurosurgery journal. Despite initial resistance and calls for retraction from the NFL, Omalu continued his research and published further studies, including findings on CTE in the brains of several other former NFL players and military veterans. His work was eventually acknowledged by the NFL in 2016, and he received the American Medical Association's Distinguished Service Award for his contributions.

Omalu's work gained widespread attention through a GQ magazine article, which was later expanded into a book and later the film "Concussion," with Will Smith portraying Omalu.

Omalu lives in California with his wife, Prema Mutiso. They have two children. He is an associate clinical professor at the University of California Davis.
