Tommy Flanagan in 1960: Who are you?
Tommy Flanagan in 1982: I'm you, but stronger.

i still enjoy the sparse chordal solo he plays on the original. it fits as a nice respite after the absolute workout coltrane gives you

I bet John wishes he let him have that second take now.

I like how despite all the memes, Tommy Flanagan's take is still to this day one of the best renditions of this piece on the piano.

you can hear the phrase at 1:08 in the original recording several times (in Flanagans solo), but he never finishes it there like he does here

The original solo is sublime, and it's a perfect compliment to Trane's torrents of notes. This is totally cool too but the original is arguably more unique and beautiful (to me).

Also Mraz's effortless example of modern jazz bass and flawless intonation over this classic obstacle course.

I like listening to some tunes repeatedly. It's that way here in Tommy Flanagan's piano on Giant Steps. Some of the chords!! The more I listen, the deeper the understanding and appreciation. RIP Tommy Flanagan.

This is virtually a test piece for jazz musicians. Well done.

A jazz pianist with everything he has to have.

He seems to be referencing the original solo a lot. After initially soloing quite freely on the changes, he essentially does a version of the originals structure. He starts leaving a lot of open space, mimicking the start stop nature, and ending in a sort of barrage of chords, just like on the original. It's kinda funny imo
