I worked with a guy who was on parole. We were not exactly friends, in that we hung out outside of work, but we lived in the same town that was about 30 miles from where we worked.
The person who had been driving him to work would no longer be able to drive him so my boss asked if I'd be willing.
I was willing to give it a try. He seemed like a good person and we talked about a lot of stuff, but he never told me what he's been in prison for. I never asked thinking it was not my business. If he wanted me to know he'd tell me.
I met with his parole officer 3 times, fist because he wanted to meet me as the guy told his PO about me. No big deal. Another time because I'd made him late for his meeting (it was my fault, not his) and another time to ask about police harassment.
The town we lived in was small (less than 3000) and the cops were constantly stopping him, or pulling me over if I was giving him a ride. No matter how careful I was the police would always find a reason to stop us, even if the cop had to make up a violation from thin air.
I thought it was unfair, considering the effort he went to to abide by the terms of his parole.

Who knew the justice system could be this intriguing? Thanks for breaking it down – now I'm ready for the courtroom showdown.

Too bad probation is privatized, which in the case of my late mother, a shoplifting charge she didnt commit led to a two year probation sentence and supervised by PCC. Her probation sentence kept getting extended because of fines in the thousands of dollars and constantly doubling. They would punish her for being treated for pain with legally prescribed pain medication. She had to turn herself in twice and bond out for unpayable fines. Her probation officer expected her to sell everything she owned to pay off the fines. It was an extortion ring to punish the poor by tricking them into thinking they'd be better off than taking jailtime, but in reality PCC extorted those under its supervision, set them up to fail, extracted everything of value from them, and ultimately they'd end up in jail for the rest of their lives anyway, It got so bad that a class action lawsuit against PCC resulted in their contracts across the country were revoked, and in my area, a judge ordered the immediate release of all in jail for probation violations because every one of them had basically been set up, extorted for all they were worth, and then thrown in prison anyway.

This actually explains a lot more than I was told when I got into trouble a few years ago I wish I knew this a lot sooner I’m currently on unsupervised probation which end in June took a lot to get to this point but glad it’s almost over

A shorter prison is often better than a longer probation for many

I am currently on state parole and have also been on county probation. The accuracy of the information stated in this video varies depends on the state and jurisdiction of your conviction.

I am currently on state parole. I’ve actually been on both They are pretty similar however being on parole is way less strict than county probation.

Texas has executed some who were innocent. The District Attorney, who is voted into office, never needs to worry about going to prison as they prosecute someone who is found to have a valid alleyby. They build a case against someone, and after they put so much time into the case, they want a conviction, even if evidence proves that person couldn't have done the crime.

In Alaska they put every single person on probation and it's not a bonus or some kind of nice alternative. Most people here reject probation and receive a little jail time because probation is such a joke

I have a buddy (for real). Was facing a month in county or probation for a year. He chose the month in jail. I don’t blame him, I would’ve done the same.

Probation departments also ignore state laws, also ignore the constitution and amendment rights.

Parole is where your released under supervision and probation is where you are not put in prison, but you were still technically under the supervision of the prison system. With probation if you do something that violates the probation, you will go back in jail. So it’s basically “freedom” but with strings attached. I haven’t even seen the video yet and I’m already guessing what it is because I watched so many cop shows and I’ve even thought about becoming a lawyer.

Maximum sentence for probation is 3 years? Where did you get that information? My first time being arrested I received 5 years probation

In Tx I got 5 years probation for a non violent crime ( a crime none the less) it was very expensive like $80 or more a month . but if you're in that situation you'd pay to stay out. Unfortunately I didn't learn my lesson then and got picked up for violating that probation. I signed 2 years in TDCJ . Spent a whole year in and one on Parole . Parole was $18 a month, AA classes, random drug test every week ( gradually going from that to once a month if that ) and in both cases my parole/probation up my a** . oh yeah and I was denied parole essentially got out on MS ( for good behavior) Only then was my lesson learnt. JUST STAY OUT OF JAIL/PRISON GUYS AND GALS.

12:36 Actually if there is something that would prevent an ex-con from making it to their parole meeting, they can call their parole officer to reschedule for a future date or let them know they will be arriving late. Sometimes a parole office may even meet them at their place of residence.

There's also "supervised release."

In some States, the old parole system was phased out. So, keep in mind the info varies from State to State.

I don't think that attending counseling actually happens. Most middle class Americans can't afford extended counseling, even with insurance. Whatever the government is providing is probably not close to real counseling, which means it is check the box counseling. Getting the offender a job and housing isn't going stop recidivism, for most.
