Jason, nice try on the engine, that thing will run fine it appears to be in great condition. There are two compression strokes on each cylinder compression and exhaust, you may be on the exhaust stroke which is 180 degrees out. Pull the number one spark plug stick your finger in the hole crank engine until you feel the air push out, then check the line on the balancer is aligned with the timing plate on the cover, rotate the engine until it is on zero and check your rotor and wires at that mark. Hope it works for you, keep on the engine it will start and run fine.

try & barrow a compression tester that will be a big help .. that will tell you a lot & then you can pull the timing cover & check the marks . Good luck friend

The hole in the cam cover was for old school timing scopes that garages had, some type of sensor was placed in the hole, at least that's what I was told from my dad who worked at Sears automotive for almost 30 years, never seen one myself though.

Maybe blown a head gasket with water in the engine. You could put trans oil down plug holes. Build up compression until rings warm up. You can get a mini starter. High cranking. Not big money from auto parts. Needs shimming. Good luck.

Those rockers look awfully dry and yes check the timing chain and sprockets, especially if they are teflon gears, good luck and don't quit on her, she'll run...might even want to check the valve lashing...

Creative use of a couple nut! We got the roof finished on my shop just before that storm! Nice work!

Could have a few stuck valves. Or lifters that are not pumping up and not opening the valves all the way.

Hello my friend It is engine timing is out Sounds like you are losing Compression You will solve the problem out You will get it running 🤔👍

Think that starter could use a shim or two and a little less timing. I think it will start

I don’t think it’s a high compression issue. I would run compression check and check the timing like you said, check the timing chain, and gears. Good luck 🍀

It's for a timing probe. You are a tooth or two off on the distributor. You don't have it advanced enough.
Good rule of thumb, get it to tdc, add 15 degrees, then set the distributor in, it should start right up. The octane is fine.
To check the timing chain, put a socket on the crank and rotate it slowly until the rockers start moving. It shouldn't be very much travel in either direction. If it is, the timing chain is worn out.

I guess the 59 is gonna be a bear from start to finish. I have faith in ya I don't see you quitting on it. I can't believe how far you have come with it. You can do it.

* All was silent. Then from a little ass garage in the middle of freaking nowhere came a ... Zing and a Poof !!! A squirrel looked up from his pine cone meal then went back to eating. As all was silent again. Except for some muffled cuss words rafting on the breeze. It's a timing thing. Shim that starter. Oh and automotive grease doesn't dessolve till 350° so the grease you primed the oil pump with is a blob floating around in your engine. Hang in there Jason. Maybe invite Oliver over for a beer. ✌️😎👍

Think you should have pulled the timing cover. Checked chain and timing marks. Use brake cleaner. Not so volatile. Hook up 24 v get it kicking. Good luck. 👍👍

I would definitely pull the timing chain cover and check that the cam is aligned correctly. Then also get a compression tester and test all of the cylinders and make sure they are producing adequate compression and that it's not leaking down. Then also check again for vacuum leaks. A last resort would be to pull the distributor out of the Nova since you know it's good and try it with that. Could be a bad distributor out of the box. Good luck and keep trying. I think that motor wants to run.

I do hope that old engine will run again.

Make sure harmonic balancer is times to crank some with rubber isolation could be twisted and or coil in distbutor could be going bad and or push rod length for proper breathing all need to be looked at

Check cylinder compression. Valves aren't seating. Probably rusted from all the water in it from sitting.
