Thanks. Excellent discussion. It's actually not that hard to get ~10K steps a day if you do a 15 min walk in the morning and then get up every 45 minutes or so and walk for a few minutes. Extended sitting is harmful. Work by Janet Lord showed that immune function is preserved (maybe slowing thymus degeneration) by vigorous long term exercise in the over 65 yo, and Riekelt Hootkooper's lab showed that NAD+ levels can be kept at youthful levels (small study) by greater that 13K steps a day in the over 65, but part of this was vigorous, not just strolling. NAD+ levels seemed to track with level of exercise over time. Mortality curves show a clear benefit in increasing steps which tend to level out around 12K per day.
