Bluegrass is one of the most popular styles of music to play on the acoustic guitar. It might seem like it’s hard to get into, but in reality, bluegrass guitar uses some very basic concepts that any beginner guitar player can grasp. In this lesson, Nate Savage will show you how to get started playing bluegrass songs on the guitar.

The first important thing you need to know is the open chords in the key of G major. The vast majority of bluegrass songs are played using chords from the key of G major. The most important ones are G major, C major, D major, E minor, and A minor (sometimes A major).

The second thing you need to know is how to use a capo. Capos are an amazing tool for bluegrass guitarists because they allow you to play the chords you already know in any key. Need to play in the key of C major? Put the capo at the 5th fret and play the chords from the key of G major. It’s that easy.

That’s all you really need to know to get started playing bluegrass songs on the guitar! If you need extra help with basic techniques like changing chords and playing clean chords, be sure to check out our other helpful guitar lessons!

Getting into playing bluegrass and got really into an indiana "newgrass" band called The Debutants. They have an awesome song called "Wish I had an Airplane" that is really fun to play. Highly recommend anyone to look it up on Spotify and they have a cool video of their string band playing it on youtube.

Playing guitar for 16 years and this is the first time a capo was explained to me in a way that made sense. I’m gonna use this all the time now

Nice use and explanation of the capo! A lot of instructors take the most basic of information for granted. Your video beautifully explains, demystifies, and clarifies a topic that is probably confusing for a lot of novice players. For more seasoned players, it never hurts to be refreshed about maintaining the same “key” through the use of the capo.
Thank you for your teaching expertise!

I like throwing a Gm in there, and bouncing fingers on/off for 7s, adds that suspicion

I gave up on guitar in the past because of my difficulty with B. That and barred chords in general.. I'm glad I looked back into trying to find a way around that handicap. Thank you!
