NASCAR’s Tornado Track

A week after the 1998 Daytona 500 a tornado outbreak happened in florida. A EF2 went thru the tracks parking lot

Sat in those backstretch grandstands several times growing up. They used to have a grandstand in turn 3 also.

Oh so that’s why the grandstands on the backstretch were never rebuilt. I just thought Nascar tore them down to consolidate more seating on the front stretch

Same thing happened at Talladega around 2004/2005 I live a quarter mile from the track and I remember it well

The tornado won the Hurricane Cindy Tornado 500 presented by Oklahoma's Tornado Alley.

Talladega has had many close calls. I think there was a tornado outbreak that thankfully missed the track during a race weekend.I can't remember the year (I think it was 2010 or around that time)

Don't have any socials, have to say it somewhere. That datona 500 made me never want to watch another race and I probably won't.

Did the track ever get hit…torn up bleachers and the image of that scoring pylon on the ground it was crazy

I forget which race it was, but I distinctly remember seeing footage of the damage via helicopter when the announcers brought up the tornado and seeing the scoring pylon on the ground was kinda surreal at the time.

the whole Daytona speedway became a ocean for a couple of weeks in late 2022

I live in the same county as Atlanta motor speedway and I didn’t even know this

A tornado also hit Martinsville Speedway in the 90s. Not quite as much damage as Atlanta though.

They should host races on the same weekend. Why break away from Daytona's tradition of planning it on known rainy seasons
