Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.

We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.

We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our YouTube channel.

On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.

#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.

We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!

My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.

We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

Hi Lawrence, great review mate, I’m not a fan of poly hives myself I only own one and that is the paradise national hive which was given to me and I’ve got no use for it as I have all wooden langstroth hives, I find national hives to small and like the larger langstroth frames. Each to their own I say. Thx for sharing your likes and dislikes with us mate.

Agree with all. I use Maisemore but make it work with the polycarbonate clear crownboard. Gives that bees space, able to feed fondant in the winter. But doea cost extra. Still cheaper than a cedar though

Honest opinions are always the best. I know I have turned down some free products because the manufacturer only wanted a positive review and I have always said if it's not good it's not good and I'm not going to say it is if it's not. Thanks for sharing my friend.

I'm changing to Abelo poly brood boxes and all other parts still in timber. Suits me.

Could you make a video reviewing how you overwinter your poly hives including what top and bottom ventilation and feeder setups? I'm using paradise and lyson langstroths but I would imagine there are general rules for ventilation and feeder setups. Thus will be my first year going through winter with them and I live in a northerly climate. Thanks.

Agree re Payne’s, it’s a pain. Paradise, had one couldn’t get on with it and sold it ! There’s a perfect poly hive somewhere in all that

Arghhh the swienty lack of rebate my biggest hate! How many times have I gone to check supers, I'll do this gently, try not to use smoke, lift the top box and pull up half the frames from the lower box stuck to the upper box and a few thousand bees in my face!! I'm not using any of my swienty boxes again until I've routered a bee space around the bottom of the box!

I purchased the abello 12 frame national last week . Their packaging they send them in wasn't great and came with a cracked roof.
The plugs that you put in the air vents don't fit all the way in but apparently that's normal according to abello.
Apart from that it's a well made hive .

I agree about all the Abelo bits - too many to loose

I’ve purchased 2 of the Abelo 12 frame poly hives, not for myself but for 2 different organisations I work with. I agree regarding them having too many ‘bits’ and ‘holes’ to plug. I’m now wondering about the BS Honey Bees Poly hive, if the only complaint you have is the grove I think I can live with that! My only gripe with theirs is I don’t think their is an option to purchase it ready painted.
Anther great video, a bit different to most but valued all the same. 👍

The paradise honey lip on the boxes is a pain in the rear for crushing bees

My biggest problem with polystyrene hives I've got badgers on site and they always find their way in I had a couple of them Claude at their entrances so now I stay away from them they will smash them to pieces

Great vid, what would you use as a divider in the bshoney polyhive super? The included dividor is for the brood box only i think. Got one after your vid on them and am curious.

Yep I hate the crown boards on the maisemour polyhives....theyre wobbly and move about when you're trying to put the lid on and bveing bottom space its really easy to squish bees with the also don't like the feeder on the maisemour poly Nuc the gap to the syrup is too big and drowns bees (I put a strip of floating foam in mine)....also not a fan of the BS honeybee Nuc divider rebate ..trying to clean it out sucks.
The only other thing about poly in general is knocking it..and losing chunks.

Not so pretty polly, so!
Joking aside they have their good points but tbh I prefer the traditional wooden hives myself.
