My Top 5 Coat Patterns

Today I'm discussing my 5 favorite me made coats currently in my wardrobe!

I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since I began following you, Whitney, and when I say you’ve made a huge, positive, difference in my sewing/wardrobe life, you can believe it! Today’s video is one of my favorite types of content (along with your “Sew the Looks” because you do a quick review of the patterns used along with a description of fabrics. This information is invaluable. BTKS (“Before TomKat Stitchery”) I had been such a utilitarian seamstress. Your channel has changed my way of thinking and observing the fashion world around me with the eye and mindset of “how can I recreate that look for myself?” sewist. In 2018, you produced a video entitled “My Top 5 Coat Patterns” one of which was the By Hand London Rumana Coat. I was able to purchase the pattern online (my very first Indie pattern) and set out working on it with a gorgeous bright sapphire blue wool coating I had in my stash. I loved everything about that pattern and instructions and the finished coat was amazing! I wore that beauty everywhere from Dec. 2018 until last winter. My needs are different now that I am in a wheelchair and have moved to the southeast coast but so are there many coat patterns out there that will work for me waiting to be made! I love how your sewing, and therefore your channel, have evolved over the five years I’ve been following you and as your enthusiasm has never waned, I’m thinking the years in front of us will be a great sewing adventure too! ❤

You are enthusiastic about sewing and you are certainly honing your skills. Many people shy away from the coat/blazer/jacket because they think it is too difficult while you seem to relish the challenge. Good job. Your results should encourage others to take the plunge.

Beautiful coats! In over 50 years of sewing, I’ve never made a coat for myself, but I have made many coats for my children and husband. Now that I’m retired, I decided to make a coat for myself. I’ve decided to make Simplicity 1067–should be an easy make to start with. I’m I’m love with the collar on that one. You’re an inspiration.

Morning Whitney! I love your channel, and while watching this morning I thought with your long grey wool coat and want to wear it closed for an occasion you could wear it with a thick belt in any colour for a pop of interest instead of putting a button on that you may or may not use.

Great video. I think I agree with your great grandfather about the coats 🧥 what lovely memories to look back on. I adore plaids and checks too. Have only just admitted it to myself. Spots would be waaaasy easier because of pattern matching!!! Nevermind. I’m into leather atm as well, bags and coats. ❌⭕️
