A thrilling tale. This story had everything - drama, suspense, fear, shock, then elation and joy. What a journey. Recommending to friends. 10/10.

Wrong you meant to lean out the window and shout "MOVE NOBHEAD" 🤣

Although this was self imposed, always be ready to encounter a deaf person

I don't understand how anyone can walk or be in close proximity to a possible danger and yet refuse to use ALL their available senses to determine their surroundings and hazard perception!

Never forget - that pedestrian may be DEAF . I’ve attended two RTCs where the victim, one was a fatality, the other was seriously injured, turned out to have been profoundly deaf .

I find this quite a frequent problem now that I drive an electric car, pedestrians just don't hear me.

This is why you should use pass through earphones so you can at least stay alert for encounters like this. Taking away one of your senses on a road is no ideal

I had a funny interaction one dusk evening in Sheffield. I was cycling on a dual use path and approached behind 2 female runners with about 5 metres of separation between them. They both had headphones on. As I passed the first runner, she 'jumped' and let out a loud scream. The next runner was completely unaware of this going on behind her so as I passed she did a similar thing! Hopefully they saw the funny side (I certainly did!) and learned a valuable lesson.

Ideally you'd look behind once in a while if you realise you're on a road which allows faster traffic. Not only to be considerate, but also for safety headphones or not. btw, bone conducting headphones are great for the hiker/runner/cyclist who needs some entertainment while they're out.

At least the pedestrian is on the correct side of the road, looking out for oncoming traffic, though, in this case, the road is so narrow that it doesn't really matter.

You see pedestrians and cyclists wearing noise cancelling headphones so they can listen to their music in peace. Totally oblivious to the world around them concentrating on their phone like here.

This exact scenario happened to me yesterday while at work in my lorry...was worrying over what to do as I'm a big hairy arsed bloke and the pedestrian was a young lady and I didn't want to scare her😂 she turned round after about 15 seconds and saw me though

This happened to me once only I couldn’t hear the car behind me because there was a tractor ploughing in the field right next to me. No idea how long I was walking before I noticed.

Maybe it's just me but I can't wear headphones outside. I find it uncomfortable to even wear a hood up. I think it might be because I grew up in a rough part of town.

Don't forget, you also have the option of winding down a window and using your voice to alert them.

Ash - Would love to have a vid about your opinion on the horn placement in cars today. In general, they used to be a button on the end of a stalk, or a small button on the steering wheel. Then, they were easy to give a subtle pip. Nowdays, they are hidden in the centre of the steering wheel behind the airbag structure. . Due to the mass of the "button" it is is now very difficult to use the horn for its correct purpose; the design in the car leads to driving in the "Italian " manner and slapping the centre of the wheel as a sign of aggression.

Its situations like this, where i think we need a "lighter" horn, just a slightly quieter and gentler sound, the horn has become synonyms with aggression and anger. Sometimes you just want to give someone a little courteous beep, just a little, hey, the light changed, or hey, you didn't see me, I'm behind you.

You're not angry, you're not mad, you're just trying to make them aware. Also, it's less likely to startle pedestrians... 😅

Alternatively, roll down the window and speak. A horn at short range can cause instant and permanent hearing damage.

I was walking once (no headphones) and didn't hear an electric car drive up behind me. The woman's use of the horn left me with ringing in my ears for hours.

Don't do that kind of thing.

Nice and friendly little pip on the horn and a cheery wave, why not 😊😊😊

Cars really need a "courtesy honk" like what Mark Rober installed. Sometimes, you need to give a sound signal that's not indicating mortal danger.
