As someone who is currently a cashier, DO NOT WORK IN FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS! They are incredibly stressful, if you fuck up you will be screamed at, you need to be prepared for any kind of situation such as coworkers not showing up during rush hour, and you get no respect, honestly that last part doesn’t seem that much but that means people will see you less than a human, they only see you as the guy who will bring them food

there is more to a summer job than just the money tho. it‘s only for the summer so it doesn‘t have to be your dream job but it is still the summer and you‘re young so you should do something you don‘t hate with every fibre of your being. when you work as a camp counselor, you get to hang out with a bunch of kids and people your age every day outdoors and your job is making sure the kids have fun while also making sure they‘re being save. that‘s responsibility and it builds character. selling ice cream means you are providing the number one summer past time to a bunch of people in variying stages of summer feelings ranging from so happy to be here to this ice cream is the thing that keeps me going. you‘re getting the full spectrum of humanity with this one. being a life guard means you get to hang out at the rec center all day watching other people endulge in the heat whilst not being able to participate. it‘s a lot of responsibility but it‘s less talking to people. freelancing means that you get to choose where you work but a constant of it is that you‘re doing it alone. you need to be responsible for having clients, learn how to manage your work load and figure out how you work best. as a cashier in the grocery store, you‘ll be dealing with a large spectrum of humans, but predomenantly suburban moms doing the weekly grocery haul and perhaps a group of younger teenagers who elected the grocery store their third place, depending on your area results may vary tho. you‘ll be sitting at the register a lot doing very repetitive work. tutoring means you‘ll get to teach something you‘re really good at to other people, who might not be that motivated to spend their summer between their job and studying. starting a business is a big commitment, especially in high school. you‘ll learn a lot about what it means to run a business, you‘ll be dealing with a lot of different aspects of working and once september rolls around, you‘ll find yourself thinking about where to go from there with school only adding to your workload.
regardless of how your summer is going to look like, don‘t forget to have some fun along the way and to unwind with your friends once you all finished working for the day.

these wages are just rough estimates! also, in most U.S. states, you can start working at 14 (though with many restrictions). at 16 is when you can work more freely at most places

To be fair, if you work as a freelancer, clients need to hire you so you make money, and often you don't get a new client in weeks.

The salaries this kind of jobs get you in the US is amazing for me. Here in Mexico, when working as a cashier in an 8-hour shift you'd be extremely lucky to get a 22 USD per DAY, when most of the time you'd get the minimum wage allowed (13.75 USD or 248.93 MXN, also per day).
