My Mercedes C55 made the same noise. It was alternator bearing. Noise is similar to power steering. The difference is alternator noise changes pitch with engine revs while power steering noise changes with application of steering lock. Be careful with "re-man" alternators which sometimes have cheap regulators installed. I got an OEM from the junkyard and transferred my low miles regulator over. Noise gone.

Thank you! Now I know it’s my alternator. I thought my problem was the transmission. The alternator it’s much cheaper to replace.

Same problem on my Celica 2005... I did the same. I changed the power steering fluid but the noise didn't disappear. The real problem was the alternator. Thanks for your video.

Well, thank you for confirming what I thought. My car has the same ticking noise. New battery was put in today and I had one almost failed start. I guess it's time for a new alternator.

Thanks for posing! I always thought a whining sound was power steering. I'm suspecting alternator is on it's way out. I think if you unplug the alternator, and if it stops making that sound, it's for sure that.

You might want to check your ac compressor bearing, basically the ac clutch.

Yep. That's what it sounds like. Lol. My Torrent sounds just like that and I've been putting off changing it until today. I finally got the service charging system warning this morning on my way to work. 😥

Tap the alternator once or twice and you should be good to go I’m not sure for how long though but it should work. With a hammer. Don’t take my word for it though. Watched a video on YouTube

Any input on my situation? I have a 2014 outback and recently got the short block rebuilt on a recall. They pulled the motor and it took roughly 5 weeks to get it back. My alternator was incredibly loud like this video but withing 2 weeks of driving the sound died down ALOT. Starts fine. Drives fine. Everything seem fine. Perhaps it's just old and probably gonna die in the near future??
