The Artemis program also known as the Artemis mission is NASA’s long-awaited mission to go back to the moon and built the first permanent colony. Part of the Artemis mission includes a new space station orbiting the Moon called the Lunar Gateway. Its purpose will be to provide a unique platform for research, provide communications with the lunar surface and a link to Earth, launch and retrieve surface exploration vessels, as well as for sustaining short-term command crews while astronauts are on the lunar surface below. The Space Launch System (SLS) is the rocket that will take astronauts back to the moon. The Artemis program will have 3 missions in total. Artemis 1, Artemis 2, and Artemis 3. Artemis 1 will be an uncrewed mission that will launch the SLS into space and send the Orion capsule into orbit around the moon before splashing down back on earth.
Artemis 1 was scheduled to launch on August 29th but the mission launch was scraped due to a leak in the system. If Artemis 1 is a success NASA will launch Artemis 2 next. Artemis 2 is the second scheduled mission of NASA's Artemis program, and the first scheduled crewed mission of NASA's Orion spacecraft, currently planned to be launched by the Space Launch System (SLS) in May 2024. The crewed Orion spacecraft will perform a lunar flyby test and return to Earth. Artemis 3 is planned as the first crewed Moon landing mission of the Artemis program and the first crewed flight of the SpaceX Starship HLS lander. Scheduled for launch in 2025, Artemis 3 is planned to be the second crewed Artemis mission and the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.
