Yngwie Malmsteen Style Arpeggio (A minor)

Here's Yngwie J Malmsteen's 5 string A minor arpeggio, but with a slight twist to make it a bit easier.

I thought I'd make a video lesson on how I do Yngwie's a minor arpeggio, the 5 string version. It's not exactly Arpeggios From Hell, but it is great fun, and it's also not the most difficult of Yngwie's sweep picking arpeggios. Hope you enjoy!

You said one thing that is complete gold. “No tabs because you should learn by ear.” After 30 years of playing I completely, 100% agree with that statement, although I would go one further. Learn the notes on the fretboard and build the arpeggio based on theory. You know its the R, 3 and 5 so find those notes and build the shapes and the inversions. Know where all your roots are. Sounds more difficult at first but you will learn faster and have a better understanding of what and how you are playing.

The way Yngwie does it is like the way Django/Gypsy Jazz guitarists do it. It has a completely different sound/attack than what seems the 'easier' way. One note on the first string then 2 on the next using down down up picking: it's a little 'cell' that the Gypsies use and then 'chain' them together to form longer arpeggios or phrases. Loving the channel btw dude.

Nice video thanks for sharing Elmo :) I'd like to see a video about the less obvious right hand aspects of playing Yngwie stuff like where and when do you palm mute, and tips for alternate picking. For instance what's the right hand technique for very fast picking in solos - palm muted or not, and how do you transition between strings? Do you pick every note when fast picking or do you just blast away and hope the left hand keeps up? Cheers!

1:22 yea, back in the 90's I bought the same Yngwie tab book made in Japan and could not figure out why Yngwie chose that awkward choice of notes to play a Am arpeggio, still have it today

my theory is, yngwie didn't wanted to sweep across so many strings, so he thought playing those 2 notes in the fourth string using legato so he was actually starting the actual sweep on the third string. Maybe. Who knows.

Not sure if I'm missing something here but I start with an up stroke on the 12 fret A then downstroke the next note on the A string and and continue the sweep.

Yeah, I never understood Yngwie's fingering for that arpeggio. I am weird and learned the arpeggio starting with the A on the 17th fret of the low E then 15th fret of the A etc... When I saw that REH video I was like...HUH??

Lick of the week is one of my favorite segments. I think you've had this discussion over at your academy 🤔. The way Yngwie does it scared the crap outta me in the beginning. It's still a strange way to do it. My guess is might not have stopped and thought about what he was playing and then it stuck with him past the point where he knew he could do it differently. Maybe. I often see how Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has made his playing more effective today and some of his chosen notes are different live compared to how he did it back in the day. On the other hand I don't find him to be a particularly special lead-player, but that's another discussion.

Anyways... Awesome lick. I enjoy using it myself although not at a proper level of skill (yet). Have a good one Elmo Never park in a roundabout Karjalainen 👍
