The supply of HRT medication Utrogestan is being restricted by the UK government because of shortages amid increase demand. Pharmacies will only dispense two months’ worth of Utrogestan 100mg capsules per prescription to help ensure continued access for women.

In this special episode, Newson Health pharmacist prescriber and menopause specialist Faiza Kennedy joins Dr Louise Newson to talk about the restrictions, and where and how to seek advice and help.

They talk about the importance of taking a progesterone as part of your HRT regime if you still have a womb, as well as alternatives to Utrogestan, including progesterone in pessary form, the Mirena coil and combined forms of HRT containing both oestrogen and progesterone.

Hm.. I am 49, still having periods, but having some starting issues related to perimenopause: light sleep, no libido, mood, etc.. went to doctor asking for HRT, specifically DIvigel+Utrogestan. Prescribed Divigel+Provera instead. I am so worried about the Provera though. Anyobody having any experiences with Provera? Already taking antidepressants and heard Provera also doesn't mix well with eszcitalopram. So frustrated due to the contraindicating doctors. I know they mean well, but the more I listen to, the more confused I am

I was using utrogestan as a pessary and fine for 5 months. 100mg for 12 nights. My doctor has now insisted on changing me to lutigest as i am using off license. This journey is so frustrating.

Hi I'm 56 and have been on the oestrogel pump and the utrogestan 100mg however because of the shortage I've been put on Evorel Conti patches, I do prefer the gel combination but in your opinion which is best? Thanks for all your extremely useful information on HRT it's priceless.

Hi louise, I'm worried as I have been just prescribed utrogestan , as my mireena coil has moved and therefore got to have this removed, I'm not sure if I'm going to replace the coil? I do worry as I suffer from heavy periods all my life, so they did say this will help with my sleep anxiety and my bleeding?
