That won't work by itself. Metal are inherently hydrophilic which means that water will be attracted to the metal surface of the coin which will sink it. If you want to utilize the surface tension to make the coin float, you have to coat the coin in a hydrophobic layer.

Or just use an aluminum coin. It works either ways
