Drone With Bird Like Leg Takes Off By Jumping Into Flight

Researchers from EPFL and a UC scientist have created RAVEN, a bird-inspired drone that combines ground mobility with aerial abilities using spring-loaded legs.

RAVEN, designed with bird-like legs, transitions smoothly between walking, leaping over 12 cm gaps, and jumping onto 26 cm obstacles. It can take off to a height of 0.5 meters and reach a speed of 2.2 m/s.

About the size of a crow with a 100 cm wingspan and 50 cm body, RAVEN uses energy-storing springs and flexible toes to mimic bird-like mobility. Weighing just 620 grams, it's optimized for lightweight, versatile movement in challenging environments.
