New Alien Flatworms Named After Covid

Flatworms, you love em, I love em, you hate em, we all think they’re neat. I mean, what? Yeah. Flatworms are everything it says in the name. They belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes which literally just means flat worm in Greek roots. There are about 25,000 species of these buggers and range in basically every tweak of the worm body plan imaginable. There are the Turbellarians – aquatic or terrestrial slug-like critters, the Trematodes – a massive grouping of parasites like the flukes and Aspidogastreans. Can’t forget the tapeworms, or Cestodes, cuz they’re flatworms too.

The first time I saw a flatworm I was like “what the F🤬 is that thing?” It moved like a slug but the thing was a solid foot long. I spent a good five minutes just looking at the thing with its weird glossy quivering hammer shaped head shifting from side to side as it navigated its way across the sidewalk on a cool morning. I was tempted to try picking it up, but I had no idea what it might do if disturbed. So I just kept watching as it slowly made its way to the grass, and little by little, every inch of its seemingly elastic body disappeared into the grass never to be seen again.

I'm early, and that brown and black flat worm I see all the time, used to see that a lot in 2009

Hammerhead flatworms look cool. Having one ad a pet would be fun, as they would be low maintenance and they eat worms and invertebrates.

The only downside is that a lot of them are mildly toxic and can become invasive. They can become a very destructive invasive species.

In my area, long black hammerhead flatworms can be found near gutter systems.

I’ve seen these growing up in Hawaii, always wondered what it was and thought it was disgusting, never touched it. Hope more research is conducted to see how they reproduce and spread. With the wide range/variety of these flat worms, I wonder if it’s convergent evolution?🧐🤔

I'm just waiting until we find extraterrestrial organisms with a flatworm like bauplan and everyone gets confused about which kind of alien flatworm we are talking about.

Reminds me of the black slug Yubaba used to take over Haku in Spirited Away.

I love that we can still find new species. I hope one day I can find something new and be able to name it 🤞🏼

Why does it remind me of the Hammerpede from Prometheus

Since you're so much into fossils and weird alien creatures, I'm kind of surprised it actually took you so long to be able to make a clip about these flatworms.😜✌️

Literally every sane person: *tries to forget the horror of 2020*
This one scientist: “lol” *immortalises the worst year by naming a flatworm after it*

For weird Wenesdays for next week can you talk about "Bashanosaurus primitivus". It's an unsual stegosaur from the late jurrasic period and came from the Shaximiao Formation. it's length is only 2.8 meters (just over 9 feet)!
