This year we decided to avoid the manic Saturday December crowds and try Winter Wonderland on a quiet off-peak Tuesday afternoon in November. With the system of having to pay for entry still in place this year, we entered just before 2pm for free entry (cheapskates) and spent the whole day wandering around the various stalls and bars that would otherwise be too busy to enjoy. It was a little quiet at first, but once it got dark it really came to life.

Given how expensive each of the attractions are, you really have to pick and choose what you want to go on to avoid spending a ton of money. For us, this meant a go on the rides that had made the trip over from Europe – Hangover, Airborne & Wild Maus XXL.
Given drop rides aren’t really my thing, Hangover is one I definitely prefer to watch than ride. All the different music and jingles they play before each drop really makes it fun to watch. The views from the top aren’t bad either though.

Airborne was one of the scariest rides I’ve ever done. With it being off peak, they were only loading one side of each gondola, meaning you kept tilting towards the floor at the top. You really did feel like you were sliding out of your seat. The ride itself is great, and I’m so glad we have one in this country now, Aerospace at Barry Island.

It was a choice between Olympia (Munich) Looping and Wild Maus XXL for our next ride and given we did Olympia most recently, we had a go on Wild Maus. It was rougher than I remembered but better than what we have in this country.

Finally we tried Ice Mountain, something I’ve wanted to do for a while now. While it’s just a normal spinning mouse, the fact the carriages spin from the start make the ride a lot better. Even though we’re very familiar with the track layout of these by now, we still couldn’t predict what was coming in the darkness with all the spinning that was going on. It’s definitely worth a go.

It was great to visit Winter Wonderland without it being jam packed for once. It’s always a nice way to start the festive period.
