Shark : "so our meat is poisonous and the taste and smell isn't even good so you not gonna eat us right?"
Human :

Shark evolves to be poisonous and terrible tasting even after the poison is gone.

Humans: Yum! This is incredible!

The shark actually doesnt have a way to relieve toxins and waste from its body so its pee is slowly excementeted out of its skin. It has to be prepared this way to remove all the unfiltered waste left in its body. It's also illegal to fish unless its accidentally caught in a fish net.

It’s fascinating to me how certain cultures have things like this. How did they get there? Some one caught that shark one day and when they tried to eat it they died? Then people figured out how he died and some one else happened to get one of those sharks and they tried different procedures to make the shark edible? How long does that take? How many people die? Why do people still do it? Just traditional? How does it even become a tradition if it tastes that bad? So many questions lol

Yo I'm icelandic, this is a dish server as a tradition. Our ancestors had very little food so when Sleeper sharks were caught they would bury it and let it rot. It was food so it was eaten. Majority of Icelanders do not eat it all year. I myself only eat it during the holidays. That's the history of this <3

Edit: Hakarl literally just translated to Shark btw.

I remember when I was in school and we the older kids made a tradition of playing competitive games against each other at lunch time. These games consisted at guessing items blindfolded, Simon says or eating something. On one particular lunch break it was decided to have þorrablót which consists of fermented shark, sour ram's testicles, sheep's head, liver sausage, dark rye bread, blood sausage and more. Keep in mind that these dishes are in small amounts. We choose a few students to represent each grade and they began eating. They all were gagging and couldn't keep it down and one of them finished it quickly and was crowned the winner. After a minute of him winning he vomited everything he ate but he was praised as the champion none the less.

I remember at my kindergarten me and my best friend tried it and we threw it in the trash. It’s really sour and just gross but the rest of the food in Iceland is really good :) we mainly eat fish and the best food is horse… yes horse but seafood wise salmon ok toast with an Icelandic sauce is really good!

This Mac Miller instrumental for “Best Day Ever” is a super nice touch. I didn’t care much for the content in the video, more for the fact that people didn’t say anything about it.

RIP Mac Miller, you really were the Most Dope🤘🏽💯

The the first thing you need to know about Icelandic pronunciation is that the stress is always on the first syllable with out exceptions.
It’s hAkarl not hakArl. It is mostly eaten during the Þorrablót feast during the week of Þorran (þ) is pronounced as (th). It is served with delicacies like pickled Wale blubber, jellied rams testicles and scorched lams head.

You forgot to mention they piss on the shark to neutralize the poison during the fermentation process
