Christopher Reeve wasn't just playing Superman. He was Superman

This is why I love Christoper Reeve's Superman. He was relatable, down to earth, and had a heart for helping people. Other portrayals of Superman have him stiff and formal to people, even when he's trying to be friendly.

Why would they cut that one line in the theatrical cut??? "We all get afraid of heights every now and then." That just makes Reeve's Superman even more endearing! Wink and nod to a little kid that even Superman can get scared. It's so perfect.

A lot of people don't really understand the saving the cat from the tree scene. It appears corny until you understand what the movie is trying to convey: Superman is virtually invincible. He could enslave humanity, he could kill anyone who doesn't tow the line instantly, he could be King of the entire world, he could be psychopathic and do incredibly evil things and NOTHING could stop him... but he doesn't. He's got all those powers and he's actually a really decent guy. He saves a little girl's cat from a tree and is really kind to her and down-to-earth. It's an important scene to establish his character.

JOHN WILLIAMS also, along with the cast and crew, deserves much of the credit to the film's success.
He imortalized Superman with a theme that will always be associated with Superman. Always.

The mother who slapped her daughter for believing she was lying about a man flying from the sky and saving her cat, who was stuck in a tree, must've felt very sad for doing that after hearing about Superman on the news and seeing it in the newspapers later on.

Other than the child abuse, this was a great scene. The little girl was NOT lying, and she was slapped across the face.

*This is my favorite scene. I was a victim of child abuse, and this scene always hits me:*

*First, we see the girl being too hard on her cat, basically scolding her cat for simply being scared.*

*Next, we see Superman save the cat.*

*Then, when the girl starts scolding the cat again, Superman stops her. He then tells the girl not to be too hard on the cat, because it is OK to be scared sometimes.*

*Finally, we see how the Mom treats the girl when she thinks she's lying. She's way too hard on her and basically abuses her daughter.*

*This scene establishes how Superman effectively broke the cycle of abuse and taught the girl empathy and compassion. Now that girl will remember what Superman told her and realize how bad her mother is, ending the brainwashing of that little girl. Now that little girl will grow up to show compassion to her OWN daughter, ending the cycle of abuse. This scene does a wonderful job of showcasing Superman as a force for good in the world. Brilliant!*

Note how the girl talks to the cat, and then the way the mother talks to her.

We have a cat who ran away and is berated by the girl, and a girl who is abused and berated by her mother. This is the world in which power is a language of cruelty known equally by everyone from kings to children. This is what Superman fights, this is what he wants humanity to grow beyond.

Cheesier than “Man of Steel”? Yes, but it still has more heart and more reverence to the character than the other.

Superman saving a cat that stuck in a tree
Spiderman stopping a train
Hulk Smash!

Superhero movies nowadays really need to bring "comic booky" scenes like this back....
