"Many adventures they shared. It was in one such adventure that Enkidu was wounded. Neither Gilgamesh nor Enkidu thought much of it for they were both strong and had never become ill. But when Enkidu became weak it became necessary to return to Uruk. It became such that Gilgamesh had to carry Enkidu back to the city, but it was too late. Enkidu suffered for twelve days before finally dying in the arms of he who had become his brother. Gilgamesh was shattered. When those close to him tried to console him and convince him to allow them to take Enkidu's body for preparation and burial, Gilgamesh became enraged. For six days and seven nights he refused to allow his friend to be taken, hoping that Enkidu would somehow rise and come to live again. He did not allow anyone near the body nor would he leave Enkidu's side. He stood watch with a sword in his hand hoping to defeat death from taking his friend. But death had already taken him. What lay there was merely his body. Gilgamesh would not concede until at last he saw a maggot emerge from Enkidu’s nose. Gilgamesh despaired and fled. He took refuge in the wilderness where he wept and mourned, undone by grief. 'Of all ways to die, after having survived their many adventures. To be undone like this was undeserving of one so great.' Thought Gilgamesh. This stunned him. 'How is it possible that one so great can succumb to such an inglorious death! Even if songs are sung to his glory, and stories told of his exploits, they will eventually fade from the tongue of man and he will be forgotten. In the end there is no glory, no immortality. Only death and decay and dust await all men." This thought both consumed and terrified Gilgamesh; for in Enkidu's death he foresaw his own."

Heart warming song, as is common in most of those ancient laments/ chants that come to us through the night of ages. I really love this music and all the culture that created it( the Craddle of Civilization). Thanks to them must of us can name each others as sapiens sapiens. As an arabic speaker, it's interesting how close this is to modern arabic. Šimainni is almost an exact cognate with arabic Isma3ni which means listen to me

I am able to come close to having something like an understanding of this song because I lost my dog of 12 years, who had been my own companion and loyal friend. When he died I was forced to look into the mirror of mortality, and in it I saw the wilting of every beautiful flower that has ever flourished and ever will flourish, and it tore a hole in me. I knew he was going to die, but when it actually happened it was so hard to accept, to really comprehend. Like all death, I think. That was seven years ago now, and I have learned a lot since then but in some ways am still in the same place. Anyway. Life is hard, the road is long, it turns and twists in the dark, and no one knows where it goes; whoever says so is a charlatan, a fool, a liar, or all three.
