Create a MySQL Database for your WordPress Site via cPanel | WP Learning Lab
Although this video specific to WordPress users, it is also a great MySQL beginners tutorial. You won't actually go into phpMyAdmin or interact with the database directly so there's no danger of breaking very much.
The first thing you need we'll do in this MySQL tutorial for beginners is log into the cPanel off your hosting account. In this video I'm working in a HostGator account. Once logged in you need to find an icon called MySQL Databases click on that icon or link (make sure it's not the MySQL database wizard). The developers of cPanel have made creating a database very easy.
Near the top of the page that loads you will see an area called Create New Database. You will see some characters followed by an underscore followed by a blank field. The characters preceding the empty field are called the database prefix and they are very important.
Enter the database name into the empty field and click on Create Database. It is best to make the database name random letters and numbers so that it's more difficult for dataminers to guess and steal your database contents.
After clicking create database you'll be taken to a new page where the name of the new database is listed. Copy that database name into a text file for the WordPress installation process I explain in another video. Then click on Go Back.
Now you're back to the database creation page. Scroll down until you see the MySQL Users section where we will Add a New User. Similar to when you created the MySQL database, add a username in the blank field to the right of the database prefix. Try to make it random letters and numbers again.
For the password use the Password Generator to create a very secure password. Next click on Create User.
On the next page you will be shown the username and the password you just created. Copy both to the text file where the database name is.
There you go, you've created your first MySQL database! That's it for this beginners MySQL database tutorial.
