The Sustainable Development Goal 7, one of the 17 SDG’s established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, calls for “affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all” by 2030. According to a UN report, progress has been made in achieving this goal but remains unequal across regions. In a recent report by the International Energy Agency, it was stated that 770 million people live without access to electricity, mostly in Africa and Asia, with the COVID-19 crisis further affecting the progress on universal electricity access.

VOA’s Amina Aliyu alongside her co-hosts Simegnish Yekoye and Ndimyake Mwakalyelye spoke to Habiba Ahut Daggash, an associate of RMI’s Africa Energy Program, about how the program is working to increase access to sustainable energy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Habiba explains the benefits and challenges of using solar energy and alternative forms of clean energy. She says solar offers opportunities for off-grid rural communities in developing countries where other forms of energy such as fossil fuel generation are not economically viable.
