It says something about the writers of Lancer that this one event speaks so loudly, in such plain terms, that even thinking about it makes it HOWL inside your head.

"If there is one sound that follows the march of humanity, it is the scream."

In Lancer, this is the moment humanity at large stopped covering their ears against it. And declared it did not HAVE to be.

One last scream to lay culpable at all mankind's feet. The song they would pursue instead is worth everything to protect.

maybe i’m weird but as you were describing the aspects of Egregorian lifestyle i was thinking about how i would RP them at the table. sudden pauses in conversation with shifting, wide eyes and wiggling ears to show they’re using “witnessing” to consult their history for how to talk to Lancers. an Egregorian stumbling upon an new osteomemetic carving with the lancers and having a reaction of awe upon first viewing and a genuine show of empathy upon touching and reading it bc it’s not just a story they’re observing, but a reliving. An Egregorian being abducted by scientists who experiment and successfully cut off their connection with the Overmind, with their family, and how that must feel like experiencing a month in a sensory deprivation tank hitting you all in a matter of seconds. how lonely and scared and devastated that would make them feel. and then further more RPing that out??

and then finally after all this empathizing with space bugs you show the cutest, most domestic image of them only to have it cut out by burned film reel.

I was listening to this series in the background and kept getting confused as to why the audio would just cut. 4th instance I realized the silence told the real story.

I have to say, this is genuinely one of the most moving depictions of the horror, tragedy, and atrocity it is that I have ever seen. Just for how it's structured. Depictions of it we get in history lessons about real life are one kind of horror and lesson; Removing the focus from the moment and instead coming at it like an anthropologist, gleefully learning and connecting with a people and their civilization, only to suddenly hit the _gap_ where a culture should be? Yeah. Wow. Ow.

Had to spend a good, long while thinking on every "humans vs bug-aliens" plot I've ever known in fiction or games after that.
A necessary reminder of what this really is, and a good mental tool to add to the kit for thinking and talking about it going forwards, too.

A perfect way to represent the void of knowledge that the loss of an entire peoples.
