#TBT Let’s Play! - Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader - A Bad Day in Helsreach Part 1

Helsreach is the most major settlement on Logan's World and there the humans, orks and other aliens rub shoulder to shoulder. A fleeing Imperial Army transport meets with some local gang members during a routine shipment and tensions rise. Chris and I throw down some 'out of the book' Rogue Trader in this first episode of the Sci-Fi game that started it all.

It really sucks that this cyberpunk element of life outside of major armies has been erased from most of 40K. This and the Rogue Trader ship captains are the most endearing part of 40k originally.

Imaging being those space marines, seeing something coming through the smoke, and a bunch of gretchins pop up, screaming and missing every shot. hilarious lmao

Brings back memories. Winning a competition in White Dwarf and waiting four weeks for the rulebook to arrive in Ireland from England!

First game with my best friend used standees from the Judge Dredd RPG. It was a scene out of Die Hard. Turn one, Judges pull up in Pat Wagon expecting to lay down the law, not realising the gang has a missile launcher! One shot later the two Judges (out of the entire squad) that managed to make their ejection system saves (we had specced it as having one) retreated off the board. Fastest game ever but such fun.

Hels yeah, like a postapocalyptic Brigadoon, Logan’s World briefly emerges from the storm

People say that old TT games were more like RPGs almost dismissively, but this looks like you had loads more fun than any modern game of 40k I've seen played.

Wonderful game! The epitome of what I personally enjoy the most in the hobby - two good friends, having fun and making up cool and fun stories as they go along playing a great game. And I'm so happy to see Chris back on the channel!

I have so many fond memories of RT and I've been gearing up to run it again this year. I was an avid player through maybe 4th or 5th edition but I don't really enjoy the newer "reroll 1's, reroll 6's, my circle of troops attacks your circle of troops" gameplay. The earlier game was about creating an interesting narrative first. It's still a ton of fun and it's easy enough to pare down the clunky bits you don't like. We always laughed during and after the game and rarely got salty over the results.

Great fun. I was about to say that my favourite GW Game, Inquisitor, is the modern reincarnation of Rogue Trader, but it is now 20 years old too!

17:14 I'm guessing that the truck contains an Ambull; maybe part of the Planetary Gubernatorial Menagerie. 29:13 What do I espy beside the dice tray?
30:20 "I'm Initiative 3; because I've got a Cabbage Head" 😂 Moments later, the Space Marine Scout makes Coleslaw.
The Grot Gunline advancing under a pall of smoke and an inaccurate hail of nails and gravel is such a great image.

Love Rogue Trader! So much more interesting than just lining up two armies across the board and hammering away at each other. Thanks for the flashback.

Brilliant! I have to say that was a lot more fun to watch than modern 40K games - I know, apples to oranges and a lot of nostalgia bias in that statement. Anyhoo, seriously happy memories from 30 plus years ago - so many yoghurt pots, polystyrene packing bits and random broken electrical devices were sacrificed to my terrible terrain building skills back then - I was a one man recycling demon.

I thought I was the only one who still had those old space goblins!! What fun to see those old minis out on the table playing 40k Rogue Trader.

Oh my God, I love it Ash. This makes me miss this game. Just the wackiness and the 80's metal/punk style of it all. Also... RIP AND TEAR UNTIL IT IS DONE!

Excellent, Rogue Trader when narative and fun were seen as more important than winning
