*No no, I agree with her on this take. Casting directors shouldn’t be looking at social media following when determining whether or not an actor is qualified to play a role. The amount of followers they have has EXACTLY 0 bearing on their ability to play the role well.*

*Tom Holland was a relative unknown before being cast as Spider Man. Daniel Radcliffe was a relative unknown before being cast as Harry Potter. Social media has made it so only those with exposure and popularity are given roles, so now even actors who aren’t necessarily gifted are being given roles that aren’t merit based.*

Judging people on their follower count and not their work related skills ... WTF is this

Actors like Daniel Day Lewis who could thrive as an actor and also live humbly and anonymously outside of Hollywood is a rare feat these days.

Met Ethan Hawke at O'Hare airport in Chicago. Talked to him for a bit. Really kind guy. Told him how out of all his films my favorite is Gattaca. He responded that it's his absolute favorite as well.

The idea that actors get roles based on follower count is detestable

She has figured out what Robin Williams warned about with celebrity voice actors. At some point it doesn't even matter about the performance anymore and becomes about the cult of personality.

The social media following just allows studios to gauge just how strong your cult following is.

It's honestly quite interesting seeing this happen because this is parallel to something that developed in MMORPGs over a decade ago. People wanted a rigid rubric, basically an unambiguous number, by which to judge your ability to play the game before they agreed to play with you. It started a slippery slope that with World of Warcraft anyway made the game very very new player unfriendly.

“Nosedive” continues to be the most prescient episode of Black Mirror. More and more that feels like the future.

This just made me like her so much more. I love people who hate social media.

Maya is allowed to be upset that she's forced to have social media lol but she's also saying that actors are being hired based on their following. A high following doesn't equal being a good actor, which is I think part of what she's getting at.

They also look at who your parents are as well.

Are you telling me Gattaca was not popular???! It's my favourite Ethan Hawke's movie. It makes me cry every single time.

It’s sad because acting is an ART and social media is a SCAM

She's a near perfect 50/50 blend of both her parents.

That’s crazy cause Scarlet Johansson doesn’t have any social media accounts and yet she’s one of the biggest female stars.

She is the daughter of two beautiful and good actors...Those managers are dead wrong for threatening her like that.

I think this is what Jim Carey was getting at when he said “it feels like we’re not the cool kids anymore”

Acting (in movies or otherwise) used to have more of a grounded approach where talent and drive was the key to good content.

The world of media had drastically skewed all that in the more plastic direction. It’s all about shock-value and likes more than it is about making something meaningful.

Makes sense to me that the man would find comfort in Sonic 😂 a franchise that seems built on a positive relationship between creatives and fans

So basically casting directors are like 99% of recruiters nowadays. Has an entry lvl position but the requirement is 5 yes work experience 😂

If you read the full interview that she did, it's not even the directors faults. She said there are only a few directors in Hollywood that are exempt from this meaning it's the studios that are demanding that the directors hire actors and reach a minimum follower count between them - when she told someone she wanted to delete her social media they explained this process to her telling her that if she deleted her social media then they would have to cover that follower count with the other people in the future, meaning it's not really an option especially since she has millions of followers.

Basically a movie won't get greenlit if the list of actors doesn't meet a certain number of followers.

When I was taking meetings with agents 15 years ago, they freaking asked me my followers… she’s absolutely right
