The Australian Shepherd is a breed of herding dog from the United States. Despite their name, the Australian Shepherd dog breed originated in the western United States, not Australia, around the time of the Gold Rush in the 1840s. Originally bred to herd livestock, they remain working dogs at heart.

I had a Aussie for nearly 15 years, his name was Charly, we lost him last April and I miss his terribly. Watching this video makes me smile because he acted so much like these dogs. Thank you!

My sweet Aussie's name was Camille. She was my best friend. I miss her everyday. I lost her tragically last Dec 29th. She followed me everywhere and yes, especially the bathroom. She loved everyone she ever met accept for one pushy narcissist that was told not to bring her snake to my home. She broght it anyway. My dog went nuts and growled at only her everytime she dropped over. Camille was a great judge of character. I loved and still love her very much.

We have our second Aussie. Pebbles died 5 years ago. She was 16. Sasha is 13 weeks old and just as amazing, and challenging as pebbles was.

Great dogs if you have the time to teach them properly, and give them something to do. We are in the process of building an agility course in the back yard for her.

I will say that if you are a first time puppy parent the Aussie may not be a good choice.

Our Finnegan developed epilepsy after 10 years. Controllable during the 1st year, but sadly, the condition became progressively worse. Still, we were very happy to have Finn while we did!! A beautiful and lovely boy ❤

Granddad had one when I was growing up. Rodeo was a blue merle AS before they were recognized. That dog could go get the color horse he was told to. Was real good at herding cattle. Smartest dog I've ever seen.

Hi guys, my sister has a Australian Shepherd and he does not like it when I try to pet him on his head he always tries to bit me. Is that common with that breed of dog?

They look exactly like sheep dogs - except most sheep dogs are black and white though I've seen others who are similar colours to these - who have never been anywhere near Australia or the US. They breed/use them in Korea as well and they're also from dogs whose parents were originally from Welsh sheep dogs.

They are not from Australia. They are called Australian Sheppards, but they were bread in the western United States.

I take my girl out 4 or more times a day in my back yard to play ball for 20 ins to 1/2 hour every time and she also plays in the house running around with our Maltese or they play and chase each other outside. She I very protected of our Maltese they are 6 mos. different in age. she still eats everything she can, she is 13 months old. A friend of mine that breeds them told me that Aussie can take up to 16 mos. to grow and 2 years to mentally grow up. up until 2 years they can go from being puppy to adolescence to an adult in seconds, and boy does my girl do that. But I love her.
