Nice video.
I personally like the small Hogo-in Zen garden because it is tranquil, cool and shady, level and easy to walk to, has all the highlights of a Zen garden, and is far less crowded than the more famous touristy spots. Monks lead meditation there several times per day. And they have a quiet teahouse inside where you can get a nice manju and matcha for a few coins.
Even the residential areas around Arashiyama are charming, I think. There are little shops, mini-parks in unused plots (which remind me of Kurosawa's Ikiru), vending machines and Lawsons, interesting houses, and friendly people to chat with. I think the rickshaw people choose scenic or interesting routes (so, like in Africa, "follow the elephants"😊).
I have never been to monkey park. Not sure if my knees can make it. But I might check it out next time.

This is one of the best guides to the Arashiyama area that I've found. Most Japan travel channels I've watched produce the highlight reel, while you're actually showing maps with proximal locations, directions, and showing video of what it's like to walk from spot to spot. Also, I like little bit of history and background you add to each spot (please add more of that in future videos!)

I'm going to visit for the first time in a few months and I'm bookmarking this video as the guide. Easy subscribe.

I‘ve been following your channel for a while now and I‘m very impressed how you present everything... the short historical input, the beauty of hidden places, the included map - and the delicious food. 😋 I‘ve been to Japan last year and want to go again next year... there is so much to explore and enjoy... Thanks for your lovely videos 💚🌸

Awesome! Thanks for the tips on the eXcafe, i love unique food options, and also for the bike ride idea, as the hotel i'm considering has free bike rentals, but i wasn't sure where i would go with one. It just so happens I was trying to figure out how I could connect to Saga Torimoto and well VOILA, here you are with your ideas! Also the Monkey Park thing, I mean, I wasn't going to do it, but it would make a great replacement for Jigokudani on our upcoming trip, as I cancelled our week in Nagano due to the excessive rain frequency for our planned dates, but then you tell me about the stairs... and oh boy do i love a good stair challenge... I can never forget my first time up Kotohira-Gu with it's 1, 368 steps, or the Summit of Fushimi Inari with it's supposed 12, 000 steps. Neither of which did i have a clue what we were getting into (early 2000's... guidebooks were just pretty pictures 🤣)

Love the historical info in your vids. Planning a trip in the fall and watched your fall video. How much cash would you recommend having on you for a day like this?

Just got off from Japan and we did a bus tour around Kyoto. Arashiyama was soooo busy and our tour guide mentioned that during Fall, it gets even more crowded. 😱

We did the bamboo forest yesterday and honestly it was a little underwhelming. Got there before the crowds so that was nice. The river area is beautiful and looking down to the river from the summit there was great. By the time we left there tons of people showing up. Having to stop every twenty yards or so so someone can get their Instagram moment was a little annoying. Not sure I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they are not early risers to beat the crowd.

Thank you for the great video and especially the monkeys. We are going to be in Kyoto in the fall and wonder if you recommend the Kyoto Arashiyama Yusai
