Why We're Not Achieving Coronavirus Herd Immunity & How it Impacts a 2nd Wave - TLDR News

The only way that life can return to normal with Coronavius still present is if we reach a sufficient level of herd immunity. This could be achieved by the virus naturally spreading through the population or via a vaccine. The problem is that despite countries unlocking we currently have neither. There is no COVID vaccine yet and according to a whole lot of data we're not even close to naturally achieving adequate herd immunity.

TLDR is all about getting you up to date with the news of today, without bias and without filter. We want to give you the information you need, so you can make your own decision.

TLDR is a super small company, run by a few people with the help of some amazing volunteers. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. There are significant academics providing a complete opposite view to this, both in terms of the virus having arrived in Europe and the U.K. significantly earlier (meaning that we under report cases), or that other forms of coronavirus may also provide some form of immunity. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University has put forward this, as have others. This deserves coverage in a video such as this.

Do you remember the good old days when all we had to worry about was Brexit?

"Humans are not herds"
Me: Fine! Let's call it horde immunity then!

Finland has had no lockdown. Schools and restaurants were closed but people have been free to leave home for any reason. Shops have been open all the time too, that includes all shops and shopping centers for example.. Large gatherings have been forbidden and a heavy suggestion to work from home if possible.
(This is a correction to comment "will finland have to go to lockdown again".)
Sure, in Finland people did not do the usual shopping and going to hairdresser as before and businesses have suffered. But if Finns wanted to, there was no restriction ever. There has been no restrictions for private gatherings either, only for public.

Herd immunity is a convenient name for no strategy.

It’s funny how Boris Johnson was talking about herd immunity until he got put in the hospital. Guess he realised that he would be part of the heard

Geez, took a long time to get around to "we don't know that recovered people are immune or for how long". That's pretty damn important!

Another thing that is often forgotten is that nobody knows how many cases will develop chronicle issues. When just the same number of death will develop a copd heard immunity plan would cripple your economy for decades.

This misses a very important principle. The super spreaders are the first to catch the disease and therefore are most likely to be immune earlier. By now, the people who are most exposed to many people are immune (baggage handlers, bus drivers, doctors and nurses, etc.), thus reducing the overall spread rate. The most vulnerable have either been shielding, or already died, so there is a different mix of vulnerable and spreaders; it isn't just about a simple percentage.

Sweeden is an odd case since they have a large trust in their government and public ... something that doesn't exist in UK....

Interesting that you avoided talking about letting the non vulnerable get herd immunity, while keeping the vulnerable isolated. This is Sweden's strategy.

And it's also interesting hearing you choose the line "when we get a vaccine" instead of "when or if we get a vaccine". But you need to get views, so not sticking your head above the parapet makes sense (a common theme of your videos for a while now). Which is a shame because I used to really like them.

the economic damage of the first wave plus the psychological toll is such that I don’t believe people will significantly isolate going forward, other solutions must be sought urgently. Cheap, rapid testing would be best because effective treatment is not yet available

The sad truth is that herd immunity is the only way out of this, and unless we want to live in a black mirror episode, or remain in lockdown for the next 18 months the best way to get herd immunity is by infections, ideally in the young as they have a far lower death rate.

The problem we have in Sweden is not that we didnt going into lockdown its that elder care have been so underfunded that they didnt have people, funds, and safety gear to keep the elderly as safe as possible. That is why our death toll is so high

The truth is that we may actually never develop a vaccine. We still don't have a vaccine for hiv, and many other viruses. Herd immunity may be our only chance.

There are two estimates of how many people in the UK have had COVID19. UCL or Oxford University, given that UCL has been so wrong on previous incidents. Oxford estimates the number of people who have had the virus at 57% of population. Herd immunity would be a possibility, if having recovered from the virus, the antibodies give you immunity.

I’m a artisan and the number of people saying they don’t believe it’s real is frightening. Those people don’t take precautions and certainly won’t get a vax when available. My family has autoimmune issues so we have been basically locked in our house for 3 mos. I started protesting last week, and I’ve been isolating in my bedroom when I get home just in case, so the mental toll is really setting in, but this virus and systematic racism are both bigger and more important than my ability to go eat at a restaurant. My fiancé and I split because we couldn’t take the stress of living with my family together, which sucks, but again, isn’t as important as people’s lives. This shit sucks, but we have to work together to get thru it

@tldr news Sweden have never hade herd immunity as a strategy, rather the light restrictions are to ease public view and willingness to keep following recommendations high for a longer time.
