Karpovs influence is underestimated. In the areas of openings (Caro-Kann, Spanish openings...), strategy (how can you win a lot of tournaments?, positional play) and popularization of chess (chess academies, marketing, he played as world champion a lot of tournaments) he was and remains great.

For me Karpov is just behind the best player of all time Kasparov.He has won an incredible 160 chess tournaments and makes very very few mistakes.

for me, karpovs style of squeezing the live of the opponent is real art and shows real understanding of chess. he is often underrated i think.

Magnus acts like the boy of Kasparov, underrate Karpov Fischer and Kramnik, though in his play style is the successor of Karpov and Kramnik

It is not surprising to see Magnus grade Karpov between 6-8 due to him being closely aligned with Kasparov. Also check out the " sanity" category ha-ha

If we had seen the match between Karpov-Fischer, I honestly would've put my money on Karpov.

1-Karpov is the one who made Fischer run away, because Fischer was not confident to score 12-12 against him
2-Karpov dominated completely from 1973 till 1985
3-Karpov won more 160 tournament for the first place
4-Karpov is the master of strategy that both Kramnik and Carlsen followed
5-Karpov 12 years older than Kasparov, yet he kept Kasparov on his toes...in 5 championship matches only 21-19 for Kasparov with 104 draws
6-Karpov beat Anand in championship match at the age 47!
7-Karpov smashed the field in Linares 1994
8-Karpov is the master of endgames that Carlsen inherited him
9-Karpov is the most decent and most humble, despite of his prestigious positions both in chess and outside chess
10-Karpov is the disliked person in western media because he is the one who let Fischer retire from chess

Anatoly Karpov's games are highly entertaining, positionally and tactically. He deserves at least a 9 in that category as well as in the genius category.
