The chimes of Big Ben

(There is no dialogue in this video) This is the bell in Parliament's Clock Tower (Big Ben). The bell at the centre of this film is called Big Ben. There are two possible explanations for the bell's name:

- It could have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works, who was a tall man and known in the House of Commons as Big Ben.

- It may have been named after a champion heavyweight boxer of the time called Ben Caunt. He fought his last fight in 1857 when it was being decided what to call the bell.

Great to see the Great Bell itself being struck. The largest bell and the most famous ever cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Shame they've closed the door on their original location but great that due to the Grade II listing that the building itself cannot be destroyed or modified to modernise it, so it beautifully maintains its original appearance and prominence as befits the oldest English business in existence. Blessings and Chimes, upon the Foundry and it's history!

#OnThisDay in 1859 #BigBen chimed for the first time. Its success was short-lived as in September 1859, the bell cracked and Big Ben was silent for four years

For those of you who are unaware, the notional words of the chimes are All through this hour, Lord be my guide, And by thy power, No foot shall slide.

Big Ben is the sound of London. Old, glorious sounding, beautiful landmark of Western civilization. He's been ringing in the hours for London since the days of Queen Victoria, and he is magnificent. God preserve Britain.

I always love listening to those chimes (though I'll have to put up with spending four years without the chimes sounding during the 2017-2021 restoration, which to remind you is because of the workers having to work around the bells while they need to hear their conversations and not damage their hearing from the loud chimes, but the chimes will still be used for important events like Remembrance Sunday and the New Year). Big Ben is one of my most favourite landmarks in the world!

Sadly Big Ben is under renovations and maintenance and won't chime again until late 2020 to early 2021. The bells will only chime on national holidays until the work is complete.

Awesome sound. To think this is basically a large version of a "long case" or grandfather clock
