Singapore's Education Minister Chan Chun Sing emphasized the need for Singaporeans to prioritize understanding the root causes of conflicts rather than taking sides.
He cautioned against the nation becoming a proxy in disputes, stressing the importance of recognizing Singapore’s own interests and global stance.
Speaking at NUS Middle East Institute's annual conference, Chan underscored the value of deep understanding and constructive engagement, advocating for solutions that transcend mere side-taking and foster genuine resolution.
While Minister Chan advocates for understanding conflicts deeply, his ministry's handling of the Israel-Palestinian conflict in the Character and Citizenship Education curriculum has faced criticism.
In February, MOE was accused of presenting a biased view and failing to address Palestinian suffering accurately. Critics pointed out the absence of key historical contexts and accusations against Israel.
Minister Chan later announced curriculum adjustments to cater to different age groups, emphasizing empathy and critical thinking.
However, requests for transparency in lesson materials were denied, sparking further controversy.
