Why Airplanes Don't Fly Straight

You've probably heard the saying that the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line. Do airplanes not care about flying quickly to their destination or what? What's up with all the weird and curved flight paths airplanes take to their destination? All will be explained in this video!

Always knew they flew in curved paths because of a round earth, but this helped me learn more about why it appears this way. Thank you! Do you around the distance a flight path would begin to look curved on a map?

You forgot that sometimes there is airspace closure/restrictions (ie around Disney and government buildings) and sometimes mountains

For those who are not going to check the full video (and yes, i totally agree because it is boring to watch) The reason why is that is, is because there is jet streams (Between cold and warm place) where the winds pushes objects in the sky, and this applies to planes, they use this to save fuel.

The thing about jet streams is that jet steams are mostly only common in winter months so there’s no point right? No, Air Traffic Control towers (ATC), ATC are usually not placed in a straight line, and ATCs or Airports would be scattered in different directions, so the planes have to usually go approach the ATCs nearest to the straight path to the destination for communication with the ground incase of a emergency, similar to checkpoints like in car racing games or car rally games.

(Extras) This is also to prevent planes from colliding into each other

There is so much that I’ve learned from your videos about aviation. There is so many things that I didn’t even question before but I think now as OMG HOW DID I NOT EVEN REALISE

Btw I’m not a bot for all those others in the comments that will think that

I knew this earlier but am glad you discussed this here. My query is just how does the pilot accomplish this route? If you set your route by setting the plane to fly a constant compass heading, say 270 due West, does that give you the shortest route or does it just follow the same Latitude you’re already on? How does the plane fly a great circle route? Thank you, Dr. J.

Anyone curious enough feel free to look up Flight 8 from Delta on Thursday November 2 from Haneda to LAX, I Don't understand why they took a direct flight over the ocean and through several portions of severe weather....I was on that flight and the turbulence was horrible.
