For anyone curious. I tried (and failed) at using the film camera.
(Don't worry. I'm trying again and learned what I messed up on)

Those are both real finds! The great thing about some of the old, metal-body film cameras is their sheer weight was the original anti-jiggle feature, maybe 1/4 second hand-held exposure if you held your breath. The loud shutter noise of some models was enough to produce jump-scares in museums and churches!

'read this if you want to take great photographs' is a really nice book, and it's got some really good example photos

It may not be practical but it’s very rewarding to load a roll of film into that Retina and learn how to shoot it.

“It’s not practical to shoot and develop film anymore”
Me, a college art student taking darkroom photography 😂 but seriously though, “Black and White Photography: a Basic Manual” by Henry Horenstein is what my class is using as our text book. It focuses mostly on film photography, but it covers all the basics you’ll need to shoot any format! Hope this helps! 😊

Eyyyy a new Fujifilm bro. Nice! When you were talking about the old camera, I immediately thought "he's gonna like a Fujifilm" and I'm glad you did get one!

Hey Scott! I might not be able to help with the dials for your specific camera (I dont use Fujifilm)- but I can give an overview of your other settings!
The two you should be most familiar with are focal length (zoom) and focus. Both of these can be controlled by the lens- the smaller dial typically controls the focus, and turning the entire lens would usually change the zoom.
The other 3 settings that you're going have to worry about are the 3 inolved in exposure (also called the exposure triangle). Those are aperature, ISO and shutter speed.
On my camera, I have a separate dial for aperature, and a 2nd dial that can be switched to control either shutter speed or ISO.
Aperture = How much light gets into your camera. Typically indicated by f/[number]. The lower the number, the more light is let in, BUT the shallower your depth of field. As you increase aperture, your depth of field widens, bringing more into focus. Aperture range primarily relies on the lens type.
ISO = How sensitive your sensor is to light. Raising the ISO will brighten your photos, but also make your photos more prone to grain.
Shutter speed = Time of exposure. The higher the denominator, the faster the shutter speed. If you use a shutter speed too slow- shots can turn out blurry (which can be used to your advantage and fun!). There's a trick with shutter speed and focal length-> make your focal length the lower number, and don't shoot slower (aka, shooting at a focal length of 50mm, use at least 1/50 shutter speed).
There is also a ring on your camera for exposure compensation. This is mostly handy if any of your settings are Auto- turning the compensation up brightens your photos, and turning it down darkens them.
This should cover the basics! I recommend you go out with your camera and just play around with the settings to see what gets you the results you want! :D

"Not practical to get and develop film anymore"
Me, who has an entire shelf in his mini fridge and hundreds of dollars sunk into 100 year old cameras: And what of it?

(Side note: That is a beautiful example of a Retina! And the case has STRAPS!! I have a bunch of older Kodaks and other camera brands. They're genuinely all so much fun)

As for advice, mess around! Digital cameras don't have the pressure of film where you have to pay for every shot, so learning what each setting does is much easier!

Man I like how when he did the knitting thing with October the octopus he looked up a lesson of how to knit and didn’t just draw it without any idea how how to knit and now he says “got any books to read to learn “ not just doing it. He’s a good person.and a good artist.don’t shame him ever.

THE EXPOSURE TRIANGLE
Just look up these three terms of the exposure to triangle, and you'll be sorted
1. ISO- how much light/bright you want into the shutter? Impacts the graininess of your pictures
2. Shutter - how long do you want the the shutter to be open for?
Impacts how you capture motion ( water, cars stars people etc)
3. Aperture - how wide do you want the shutter to be open for?
Determines the depth of field.

Hope it helps!!

As a professional photographer, who shoots with the Fuji system…

You have a WONDERFUL camera in your hands there!
More than happy to recommend resources or answer any questions you may have, Scott!
Blessings!

As a professional photographer it’s really awesome to see people getting into photography! Honestly, unless you’re going for a specific style then there’s really no better teacher than yourself. The earth is the artist, you are the observer.

There’s plenty of free guides online though that you can find, and communities! Viewbug and GuruShots are my favorites for connecting with other photographers and sharing my work!
