Intense/crazy media like that avoids the toxicity problem by filtering out people who will be toxic just by being what it is. The kinds of people who can get into that stuff aren’t super likely to call out characters for being “toxic” and such, and by virtue of that that helps filter out some of the toxicity.

When your protagonist exclaims how much she can’t wait for the people who hurt her to slowly rot away in the first 10 pages of your story and she’s one of the nicest characters there, people who get mad about characters being bad people probably won’t get into that in the first place.

Surprisingly, there is an actual correlation between this.

The more cutesy the game or show, the more messed up the fanbase tends to be.
And the more horryfying and gruesome the game is, the more chill and caring the community tends to be.
And I'm glad F&H is getting recognition for that.
