I feel like I dodged a massive bullet. I've been using a 2011 iMac for all my Youtube videos. I was considering getting the latest iMac to repalace it. Instead, I'm going M1 MBP and getting it setup on a secondary monitor. I'm very excited for this.

Thanks for this Matthew - I sold my 16" i9 for $2k and was super paranoid I'd miss the speakers, screen real estate etc and agonized over the Pro vs Air. But Microcenter has the Air 256 for $929. So $999 and change with tax gets me by just fine until I want to go to the next 16" iteration.

Pro also seems to have 10% more battery life. But overall I agree, MacBook Air should be your default choice.

For me, the lack of touch bard is an actual feature. I have a 2018 MBP 15" given to me by my company and I hate how often I touch that crap by mistake. Have I ever used it? No. So I got the Air: no touch bar, I don't care for the mics, the speakers sound better to me on the Air, and I do photography so I'll never step on the gas for so long that it needs a fan.

Thanks for your review! I went from a 7 year old MacBook Pro 15 and bought the base M1 Mackbook Air hoping I would like the smaller screen and leaving the MacBook Pro. After watching the video, the Air 13" seemed like it had the specs for what I needed. Immediately after unboxing the M1 Air, I knew I wasn't going back to a larger and heavier MacBook Pro. The gold is a rose gold and so pretty! The keyboard is much easier to use. I think the air is so cute, and actually like the smaller screen. The speaker is louder and better than my older Macbook.

I got the Pro for a couple of reasons - slightly brighter screen, slightly better speakers, better sustained performance. Honestly I am lusting slightly after the slightly smaller size and weight of the Air but there's not a lot in it. I've had the Pro for about 12 hours now and my only real bummer is the lack of 4 ports, I truly wish it did have that, but I'll get by. As for the Touch Bar, yes it's mostly pointless and physical keys would be more practical, however there is one use I like the Touch Bar for, which is scrubbing through videos. I don't really do video editing, so I'm talking about YouTube for example. Also, there is one particular website I watch TV shows on (legally, it's a legit site) and you can actually use the Touch Bar to skip commercials by scrubbing to the the end of each ad. I'm sure this is unintentional and one day they may notice and fix it, but for me, for now, it's a non trivial nice bonus to the Touch Bar!

The microphones sound exactly the same to me on both? - and the speakers I think could be the same, just the larger enclosure on the pro makes a slight difference, but it's surprisingly close!
