Disumano, terribile e allo stesso tempo con una continua frenesia ed estasi pura, finendo dolcemente in modo commuovente.Grazie Signor Richter.

This is purely unbelievable. Left hand never stopped .at all.

Richter was a famously able sight reader, but here he seems to be playing with no score (maybe because it’s just too fast) and at about 3:30 he signals the page-turner to remove his glasses! These are trivial observations, I know, but all the superlatives about his playing have been written!

So much fun seeing him perform this. Thank you! Superb. The close is breathtaking.

Why does everyone worry about the pianist's expression and posture, editing and shots of face vs. hands? Richter himself preferred to play in the near-dark because he said people should not be distracted by such things. I always close my eyes of have the greatest possible concentration - very rewarding

The ending of this is breathtaking piece after all the complexity and driving syncopations, ending on a final beautiful exhaling coda.

Richter somehow has a great sense of what the composers wanted to convey. I hardly get that from most other pianists

Stupendous performance...I have the legendary DG performance on CD. I think Richter's tempo in that one is a bit faster than here, and I like the piano sound a bit more, but both performances are great! Being able to WATCH Richter in his virtuosity here certainly adds much to appreciating his magnificence as a performer! He is one of several great artists I would have given several years off my life to have heard in person!

A few months before this performance I had first heard Richter play live (Beethoven Rondi op 51, Sonata op 101 and Variations on a theme by Diabelli ). His 1959 recording of Schumann's Toccata has been hardwired into my musical mind for more than 25 years - with my eyes shut, this one is clearly Richter. For one reason or another Richter had a page turner - you can see him in the video, however he does not require any sheet music for this performance of the Toccata

I love how halfway through he can just turn away and ask for his glasses to be removed while still playing.

Does anyone know what year this was filmed? He’s marvelous

The Toccata is so difficult it's rumored that even Clara herself begged off playing it as an encore in her later years of concert tours.
