This video shows you how to prune a peach fruit tree to make sure you don't cut off all its flowers. The garden guy teaches exactly when to prune peach trees in South Africa and how to prune peach trees. When is the best time to prune peach trees in South Africa? The best time to prune early spring flowering peaches is to prune imidiatly after your peach tree is finished fruiting. Thus peaches should be pruned during early to mid-summer so the new growth encouraged by pruning has enough time to harden off and form dormant peach flower buds before the first frost and the cold of winter hits. How to prune a peach tree that flowers in spring? Start by pruning and cutting away the entire top third of your fruit tree. Now assess the frame and structure of your peach tree from the top. Remove all branches thicker than 1 cm in diameter from the centre or crown of your peach tree, also make sure you prune off all the smaller branches causing congestion in the centre of the peach tree.
Make sure you leave some green growth that was formed in the current growing season on the tips of the main branches of the tree. These new growth branches will be where the peach flowers for next spring will form and stay dormant throughout winter.

Well this makes so much sense…I have been doing it wrong! Everything I have read said to prune about a month before the spring warm weather hits (so in Eastern Washington where I live that would be like February). No wonder I have been having the problem of my tree getting WAY taller than I want…because I can’t butcher it back as aggressively as I want to because all the new growth is at the ends and I don’t want to prune it all off. Next season I will get it right!

I like to use the open cup design in the shape of your hand, with the thumb pointing south. This will give the highest sun exposure over most of the tree.

Thanks! I didn’t get peaches last year from a tree that previously produced wonderful fruit. Now I know that I waited too long into the winter to prune. And now, Jan 30, I think I’ve done it again! Damn! I wonder if I should not prune at all and just wait until after fruiting time to prune this summer? I live in a warm climate, leaves don’t fall off the tree until December, now I know that that is already probably too late.

Great video! Spring came really early here in NC, I didn't get to prune while dormant. I've got two Contender peach trees that I planted three years ago, last year they exploded upwards. Hopefully I won't stress the trees out by the heavy prune I've got to do now🤷‍♂️
