On this episode of Expert Voices, Lisa Dennison explores one of Alexander Calder’s most iconic mobiles ever created, Untitled 1949. Calder famously said, "Why must art be static?" and this piece truly is full of movement and life. Through precise engineering Calder’s work is beautifully composed of arcing biomorphic forms, perforated sheet metal and aerodynamic shapes that flow through space of the room. Sotheby’s is proud to be offering the majestic piece, Untitled 1949, in its upcoming Modern Evening Sale, 16 November.

Calder’s mobile and sculptures are unique. From whales to cascades. From small to large formats, . Inside walls or outdoor. How do I love his circus, where all pieces are created with wire, pieces of cloth, and simple elements and materials. Creativity to the highest level. Thanks for the description and details.

I loved seeing some of his work at my college. It's also amazing that a product of an engineering school and mathematics could create such amazing art.

I see plenty of those pieces at my local junk yard. Will stop by this afternoon and pick up a few, probably 5 for 1 dollar.

There are two of them at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville Arkansas. However, neither one of them are ever allowed to move. There’s no breeze on Either one of them. It’s really sad.

A little over rated if you ask me. Over blown wire hanger art. Just saying.
