Love this film. The music in the more weighty moments reflect the tragiedy behind how our character's poor choices got them there. Like when Hrothgar orders Grendel to "Fight me" and they both just stare at each other with so much tension.
I also love this movie doesn't shove it down your throat who Grendel's father is. The exchanged looks, the hints in dialogue.
Grendel's mother is a very interesting villain, she doesn't just kill, she seduces, she reproduces and uses the king's own son against him. She survives by seduction and she bides her time until the son is grown

Despite that it deviated from the poems i honestly liked that aspect by turning it into a tragedy. The age of monsters coming to an end in a more realistic tone. The poems themselves are HIGHLY exaggerated if you really read them but this movie shows an angle as if they were embellished the whole time which honestly was a good angle for me personally form a story tellers perspective. I think the movie would have done worse if the movie had followed the poems to the T. No one really likes a perfect hero and we see that even great heroes are human with this film.
