I used to do something similar. NOT playing like Ichika, but unscrewing the neck from a pawn shop special "Ranger" with the strings loosened off, folding it on itself, and stuffing it in my suitcase as a travel guitar. My Ranger is surprisingly resonant unplugged, and is great for playing in a small room without annoying neighbours. (Through an amp it sounds like a pawn shop special.)

With modern DAW's and VST's like the ones from ML Sound Labs or Neural or many others you have access to infinite awesome tones! We are lucky to live in these times when it comes to conveniences, advances, and tech. Easy enough to travel with an interface, a laptop, a guitar cable, and now a decent travel guitar.

When I first started playing in high school to record we used "cassette tapes" and cheezy microphones (had no money back then), lucky if you had a good amp - I had a HiWatt which was loud as all heck. I can't remember how I ended up with it but I kept it at a friends house who played the drums. We would play every Saturday and he lived in an apartment building so the tenants had to just HATE it! But his parents owned the building so...

To get a semi decent sound I had to have a bunch of pedals for chorus, reverb, delay, distortion, etc... The one thing I wish I had was a noise gate - didn't know they existed back then!
