Can’t disagree with anything you’ve said… with one caveat. Leather motorcycle jackets that see thousands of miles a year in hot, dry, cold, and wet weather exacerbated by 60-80 mph winds might be an exception. I clean and condition my motorcycle leather once a year, and so far so good for the past 15 years…

Beautiful jacket! I’ve used Obenaufs on older black and brown jackets. Took two coats, but revived them beautifully. Picked up old Sears leather jackets at thrift stores, 70s jackets, I wear often and love old style jackets. Plus I’m short and have short arms and these jackets fit me so much better.

I like bick 4.. it’s a great conditioner it literally doesn’t change the color or anything it just acts as a lotion almost and absorbs perfectly into the leather. Never had any issues over using or under using.

It turned out great though!

The jacket darkened because of the product you used, not because of the technique and method of application.

Some products darken the leather and some of them don't, no matter how much you

Such a diamond in the rough. It for sure needed conditioning and looks perfect now.

Used to be that leather makers would order their stock a very long time ahead of production and who knows how long the tannery had it around before the sale. Which led to the common use of conditioner after buying anything leather. Now we have such just in time ordering that there is really no need for conditioning for quite some time.

In the future you might try putting the jacket down flat on a table (on top of a towel to keep the table clean). This allows you to provide the needed pressure while your applying the conditioner without having to put your hands inside the jacket.

You probably just barely saved that jacket. Leather and jacket’s don’t fix themselves, . Once the surface is starting to crack and you can see the lower surface it’s past due. Cracks will continue to deepen and get worse, especially on wrinkles, creases and folds.
The deeper brown is probably closer to the original color. Sun fading on one arm might be the arm that was hanging out a car window for years. Sometimes the wrinkles, folds and fades tell a story. Good job saving it. Take care.

Great video! Would love to see a video about cleaning the inside of leather jackets to remove sweat, BO, smoke etc. I’ve seen so much conflicting information where some people say a certain method worked wonders while others say it doesn’t work at all or some of them sound just downright unsafe.

@Jake def do an experiment with Beef Tallow. Like to see how you feel the differences are. Im really not a fan of putting synthetics and plant oils on leather. And I bet this would work better..

now rub it down with a t shirt or an old towel

You’re definitely right about all the conflicting and divided opinions on conditioning a leather jacket. I just rubbed one of mine down with some Venetian Leather Balm and the label itself says to try one of their other conditioners for leather jackets. That alone is probably already sacrilege for a lot of leather jacket guys. But if you know the properties of the leathers and conditioners you’re using, it’s super hard to mess up leather.

Nice jacket, I had one similar it was a German jacket from the 30’s. I traded a Woodstock album for it in 1970.

I enjoy your style of video. It seems like it's off the cuff and genuine. Really enjoyed the topic because I purchased an Aero Sheene jacket in front quarter horsehide right around two years ago and I was curious on conditioning the jacket...looks like it'll be a while. Haha!
Also, I contacted Horween out of curiosity since it was their leather on the jacket and they are with you, basically saying don't conditioning it

What happens if leather is "over conditioned"?
