IC-M700 Marine HF SSB reviewed for Ham Radio

Let's look at how well the Icom IC-M700 Marine HF SSB radio from the 1980s works for ham radio. We'll look at basic usage, repairs, and modification. Stick with it, there are some long gaps I accidentally left in, but you can see the details of the SRAM upgrade and the audio speech processor install.

Full schematic of SRAM Memory Expansion:
Read-Me file:
Schematic:
Microphone schematic (unavailable anywhere else):

How to add 10/11M (edit the SRAM contents and then retune the VCO):
Notice that the hex editor shows the frequencies nearly in plain text:
050432ff050432 (RX and TX) is the frequency 23.4050. It's just backwards. The IC-M700 does not have any special "configuration bits" in the SRAM; it is ok to erase entirely.

Lastly, I'm sorry about the audio quality here. The microphone slipped inside my shirt and it frequently distorted! I've tried to at least turn it down during the worst clipping so that it isn't too awful.

I've had a IC-M700 sitting on my desk for over 2 years now (Sailing buddy of mine gave it to me) & this video finally got me motivated to put it on the air. I'll need to build me a "stacked" SRAM as those 48 channels just don't cut it. Nice work. 73 from WA5IDX (hamming it up for over 60 years).

Thanks for the vid, I enjoyed it mate. I like the idea of repurposing professional gear for amateur use.

I just bought a TY unit with CW, shipped in from CA later this week. I had a non TY years ago without the PA that was used as a civil air patrol trainer and I loved it. Hope this purchase works as good.

Thanks for the info. Will make for an interesting project with the two IC-M700TY's I just picked up.

Loved these Marine Radios, fully wide banded they were fun to play with. I had min running with a Motorola GMN-6146c Hand Mic. Never got a bad Audio Signal Report. Nice Video. 73 into Montrose...my Ex-Neighborhood. I used to live down on Hill Rose in Sunland near the Golf Court for a few Years. Happy Weekend de Uncle Guenter 💯👍🙋‍♂

Very good mods. I like when someone gets creative as you did.
I bought a CMC 26 CH SSB. It works fine. It can be opened up as well. Marconi seems to be a tank. My dad had WWII Wireless #19 sets that he played with.

I bought one of these (TY version) with the coupler (AT-120) for $100. It's a bit salty, but the transceiver works, haven't even hooked the tuner up yet.
