As a Texan, I can say Texans do have a lot of tigers and other odd pets. Pitbulls are our chihuahuas!

As someone who spent 8 years working with rescued big cats at a sanctuary, loads of cats come from Texas. People would travel from all over the US to go to the Texas auctions because they have some of the most lax laws on exotics. There are definitely more tigers in the US than in the wild. Sanctuaries are exploding with unwanted, sick or confiscated cats. We went from 18 to 60+ cats in 4 years and constantly had to tell people we were not able to take in their cats because we were at legal capacity for our size. Laws have improved drastically over the last 15 years, but it's still too easy to buy a big cat, and the animals suffer because of it.

I just found this out today and wanted to confirm it and now Texas is on my list of places I will not be visiting anytime soon or ever. Also on that list is Florida and Australia.
