It’s mind blowing to think that it’s only been 100 years since this discovery was made- and just how incredibly far we have come since then. I can’t even imagine what incredible discoveries will come to light 300 years, 1000 years, 10, 000 years from now!! I freaking love astronomy:)❤

A lot of other galaxies were known about at that time, but likewise believed to be "spiral nebulae" by many. In the early 20th century there was much debate about whether these were objects within the galaxy, or outside it. When Georges Lemaire discovered that some of these 'spiral nebulae' were getting redshifted, he realised that they must be receding from us. Edwin Hubble later showed that they were tremendously far away from us, and it was soon found that they were different galaxies entirely
