Ukrainian flags raised in territories ‘annexed’ by Russia

Ukrainian troops advanced dozens of miles in Kherson province in the south of the country and made additional gains in the east.

Videos shared on social media show Ukrainian soldiers raising flags in territories of the four provinces that Russia claimed it annexed last week.

Genuine question here, Ukraine is doing great at pushing russia back, it looks like a 1 sided battle so im curious how russia took so much ground in the beginning, did Ukraine get caught of guard and they've just now recovered and are in a position to fight at their full strength? I've been sort of semi-following the war so i know like the summary or overall viewpoint but not the details like what i mentioned
