The Royal Jewels - EP1 - Although many of the monarchies of Europe and Russia no longer exist--or exist in a much more ceremonial capacity--their astonishing jewelry still remains and is still worn by the remaining royal families.

The Royal Jewels (2013)
Director: Anna von Lowzow
Stars: David Bateson
Genre: Documentary
Language: English

Synopsis:
This is the story of an historic ruby parure worn by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. It was made for Napoleon’s magnificent coronation in 1804 when an incredible amount is spent on attire as all eyes focus on France.

When most monarchies only use their symbols of royal power when lying in state, it is also the story of the most visible sign of royal dignity, legitimacy, when these impressive gems are worn at banquets and State visits. But few know that some of the world’s most fascinating jewels are often linked to high points in royal history.

Napoleon’s first fiancée Désirée, the Marseille silk trader’s daughter, attends the coronation wearing beautiful rubies and diamonds. Later she brings the parure with her when she becomes Queen of Sweden.

The Swedish royal family inherits magnificent jewels from the French family. Many remain in Sweden but some come to Denmark in 1869 when Désirée’s great-granddaughter Princess Lovisa marries the heir to the Danish throne. Crown Prince Frederik later inherits the rubies and his wife Crown Princess Mary wears the historic parure for the first time at her wedding in 2004.

Members of the Danish and Swedish Royal families tell the fascinating story of the Royal jewels and the human destinies behind the gems. The history of the Royal Jewels, the Royal Houses and the art history of the gems has been never told before.

A fascinating world few know – but many would like to know more about.

Oh my goodness, seeing how happy Crown Princess Victoria and her husband were on their wedding day was lovely! There was joy and pure love in their faces.

Thanks very much for uploading this. I owned it on DVD until my house burned down in 2019. I’ve missed being able to watch it.

Much as I love the British royal family I do wish they were able to learn from their European cousins the art of simply being regal and accessible. This is a great documentary about European royal jewellery and history. The manner in which the European Queens communicate is heartening and educational.

A fabulous video.
Queen Marguerite appears to be an amazing woman extremely sensible and approachable. I wish her a happy retirement.
Long Live King Frederick and Mary.

Denmark queen is beautiful and kept her figure all her life.
She is warm and simple in a way that is relatable.
No wonder she lasted over five decades, i like her a lot.

I cannot wait to see Queen Mary in the Danish Emerald Parure. I love that King Frederik is a crier.

Admittedly the Danish Royals are my favorites among the Europeans. But all of the Scandinavians are delightful. They exude an openness throughout the generations, and when interviewed Queen Margarethe and the family are so candid, and seem to take great joy in knowing their history and sharing it. In the younger generation I find that Count Felix continues in this tradition, as he seems quite at ease when interviewed.

One of the best videos of the European Royals that I have seen yet. So impressed with everything: Sweden’s Queen Sofia was so lovely and well spoken in English. Queen Margarethe of Denmark is also well spoken in English - they are both dignified, appear to be down to earth (as royals go). The narrative by all of the ladies was absolutely perfect - the history and knowledge surrounding all of those stunning jewels was the remarkable. I feel quite happy after seeing this. Thank you.

Our queen Mary (still getting used to calling her queen and not princess😁 but so hapoy that crowning Mary wasn’t because we lost ourv much loved queen Margrethe🥰) has always reminded me of our late queen Ingrid, both in beautiful looks as well as beautiful personality. We are lucky and proud to have such wonderful queens in Denmark 😊🇩🇰❤

Queen Margrethe is so open with her interviews. People often confuse her as just a historian. While she is, she is a Queen. Truly admirable

I like how the jewels can be made into different kinds of pieces assuring the jewels themselves can be seen more often

Legacy jewelry is so much more exquisite for its history and it shows in the way its inheritors carry themselves with it on. This is true even with the modest pieces left to me by my grandmother. I think that's why I teared up hearing the queens show so much enthusiasm seeing these pieces on the family members to whom they loan or gift it. Even better when they support them altering it to make it their own.

Mary certainly is a passionate person judging by her kiss with Frederick on the balcony after the wedding ceremony. How delightful! Greetings from a Polish Australian living in Sydney. A true Aussie!
