My dad always makes metaphor statements like this. One of my favorites is "End it on a bacon". When you're having your breakfast in the morning, always save a piece of bacon for the last bite so you savor the best part. If you're having a bad day art work, "end it on a bacon" do something that makes you feel good about what you've done to make your money today. If you had a scuffle with the wife "end it on a bacon" make sure you have a laugh or a kiss before you go to bed so you don't wake up with a sour feeling in the morning. "End it on a bacon".

Getting off the interstate physically and existentially is always good advice.

I was a little kid in the 60s and We never traveled the interstate. Of course they weren’t as vast as they are today but you just never knew what you would find. After 40 years of driving big truck on interstates, I’m spending the first few summers of retirement traveling the highways and byways

Im from germany and many of my peers always want to visit New York and my question is: Why? Its just like every other big city. If I see landscape like this, down to earth folks, this is what I like. Beautiful man!

I used to work oil and gas projects in the middle of nowhere northern alberta. Decided going south, as I had no reason to rush. Drove hwy 40 from Cadomin to kaninaskis country. It's not a hwy, 2 lane at best the road is still there. Cross a continental divide that pushes the athabasca north 1600km dropping down into the cardinal River Valley. Fly fisherman's paradise. Bull trout country. You border jasper then Banff national parks all the way south. 10 years ago, never forget or regret it.

Americas a beautiful country and I wouldnt know that if i just took the big roads like my parents always did.

2003, my Very Significant Other got sick.
Within a week of diagnosis -- while selling everything -- we acquired a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to convert to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
We hit the road from Oregon with the vague goal of 'south'.
Twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles around South America.
Alaska, Panama, all over North and Central America.
Summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes.
Winters on isolated Baja beaches.
.
Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard.
We prefer two-lanes... although puttering along on the freeway at 52mph in the slow lane can be ever so amusing.

I used to drive a pickup truck for work in Texas and I found out the reason I’d get home tense and stressed out was because of all the rushing on the interstates.
I began to do my best to take the highways and backroads and it was so enjoyable. You get to really know the roads and small towns and eventually you know where to stop to eat some delicious meal and you get to meet and interact with very nice people.
And if you pull off the road, sometimes just to make a call in your truck or check your tires or something, there’s usually someone slowing down or pulling over just to ask if you need any help. Especially when there’s no town near by.

There are a lot of good people in this country. But you have to explore it and you’ll find out.

I just took a trip to Pa from NY. A few high ways but lots of back roads. Lovely farms, cows, horses, & live stock. No traffic! Lots of beautiful wood land & lakes. Great trip!

We're rebuilding a 78 nomad camper little 20 footer to do exactly this. Rehoming my gelding & mare to therapeutic center, renting the farm out and embarking for self discovery, yeehaw.

I gave this a shot this morning on my drive into Nashville. Less traffic, less stress, more lights. And took about the same amount of time. Anything is better than I-24!

I couldn’t agree more. I regularly drive out west from north Texas. Everyone’s in a hurry, rude, and inconsiderate. Seems like this country has forgotten that we are all in this together. Love hearing your thoughts and wisdom. Always look forward to these videos.

My dad always stopped at the historical markers on our vacation trips growing up. I developed such a love for our country and history on those trips.
