OBS vs vMix - What streaming software is Best - Killer Feature Comparison

This video will provide an OBS vs vMix feature comparison so you can make an intelligent choice on what software is best for your needs. The fundamental difference between the two pieces of software would have to be the origins of the software. vMix was born from a more corporate production environment.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

The software shines when used for sporting events and live corporate interviews. The software is also perfect for creators who want to stream on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch. When you look at the interface, it feels like it would fit perfectly into a TV studio in New York City. The software looks and feels like professional production hardware. The interface is cool, but the learning curve needed to understand how it works will be a bit steep at first. Another big difference is that vMix is not free. It'll cost you $60 to get a minimal amount of functionality, and if you want all the bells and whistles, you'll have to pay a whopping $700. One payment feature that Scott thinks is fair is if you purchased the $60 payment tier, and you decided to go with the next level, which is $300, vMix will only charge you $240.

OBS studio comes from the opposite end of the spectrum. The code is open-source, which means it's maintained by programmers who donate their time to improve the software. OBS Studio has a massive army of programmers, and you'll begin to see this first hand when you realize the pile of plugins, tools, scripts, and themes that are available for the software. Unlike vMix, where all the functionality has been preinstalled. OBS requires that you tinker to get it to do what you want. OBS is like a box of loose wires. You have to research how to connect the wires to achieve your needs, and there's not much OBS can't do.

At this point, you're probably wondering what program is better. The simple answer is it depends on you.

Do you have a budget? (vMix)
Are you a YouTube streamer (OBS)
Are comfortable with computers (OBS)
Do you want it just to work (vMix)
Do you want an interface that is easier to understand (OBS)

I think you get the point. You need to determine which program is best for you.
Enjoy the video

Absolutely NO comparison. VMIX is basically a free version of TriCaster, the most common pro-production system in the world. Nobody is using OBS for tours.

Scott, you do a very nice job producing content. Both the audio and video quality is good, and your narritive is brief, to the point, and effective. I'm a professional audio engineer, ( working concerts, shows, conventions for 39 years ), and I understand how difficult it is to explain tech to the "opinionated" masses. You strattle this hurtle very well, Scott. Nice job and thank you for your insight.

Have OBS up on Linux with several of the plugins you've revealed using camera(direct HDMI and Droidcam for OBS, ), text, image, and NDI sources. All works perfectly!

Yeah, I use both obs and vmix and your comparison of the two is spot on. I find somethings are easier and more efficient to do in obs than vmix. However, vmix gives me that professional feeling tool for certain productions. For me it all depends on what I’m trying to accomplish for the show I’m producing and then using the tool that will get the job done with efficiency. Great video!

obs is fine and has a lot of add ons and such. but It would crash on me out of no where or the audio decided it didnt want to work. and so on. Vmix just works for me. Biggest reason I just purchased it. Nothing worse than live stream not working or people saying the audio is breaking up, only to find out something in obs was causing it.

How can viewers get an unbiased judgement from Scott since most of his vlog topic about is OBS. By the way, thanks Scott. I learned OBS from your tutorials. Lately, I learned to use VMix and still discovering which one is better. Unfortunately, I didn't see you doing VMix tutorials.

When you combine OBS and Fresh Air VST for your live band... ugh... I can tell it works beautifully.

The editing of the video is way more stellar than what you expect going into this LOL.

Rather than adding echo to your voice for emphasis, have you considered a bass boost? The echo on its own makes you sound a lot further away, which seems like the opposite of the intended "aural underlining".

Really great to see this comparison. You hit some of the basic points I'd be looking for. Thank you.

I'm not sure I share your thoughts around layers in vMix. Though I would probably still give OBS the win for ease of use, vMix is pretty robust and simple enough once you get used to it. Bounding boxes for resizing are really truly my biggest pain with vMix. It would be great if that was added. You might have missed that the function of rotating the image had a Z with a grey square around it. You can, very unintuitively, click it and it cycles between X, Y, Z and spin the image in multiple directions. You can do some surprisingly cool things with that feature.

I’ve used OBS for Linux and it works fine. Like for the Mac, however, the number of available plugins is more limited than it is for Windows.

Great video Scott. I have used both OBS and VMix. I just like VMix better. As of late I’ve been using VMIX as a virtual camera with StreamYard. I appreciate your honesty in this video. VMix is not for everyone that is for sure.

Excellent video. @ 11:45 you zoomed your pic n pic to a larger image and it seemed to move smoothly from one place to the other while the pic enlarged. CAn you please refer me to one of your vids that will show me how to do that? I use resolve to edit and obs to record and stream. Thanks man! Brian

I have been using OBS-Studio in LINUX MINT 19.3 and it is superb for recording and for streaming. It has way more features than I will ever use. Our church uses it too.
